Just looking at the downloads page, or should I say pages. There are now 76 of them! Of course half the downloads in there don't even have working links to the files anymore, same with the screenshots. Then of course there's the questionable categories. . . what's the difference between Platform and Platformer? And 2 different RTS categories? I know keeping a site like this together is a lot of work I was just wondering if there were plans to get rid of some of the old stuff. Plus I'm sure a lot of people have posted games and apps that they would rather not have up anymore (there isn't a way to delete your own uploads is there?).
Just thinking about these things since with mmf2 out now (and potential for a lot of new people to start showing up) it might be good to get rid of some of the garbage floating around, since a lot of new garbage will probably be added.
I actually agree, a good clean up is in order, however I'd set up a system where it checks for broken links before it removes them. If the download link is 404, then remove it. If that's not possible, then yeah, a good cleanup for all downloads submitted before last month or something.
I don't think we should delete anything.. Sometimes it's good to look at past downloads, comments and such. Plus - some of them do still work so we'd have to check through every single one.
I think the best idea would be to archive them, rather than just delete them. Then just have a link on the downloads page saying "View archive" or something.
I think a clean up is a pretty good idea. Maybe if we had a system for users to notify admins if a download had a broken link so they could check it. Then whoever has a broken link would be notified to fix the problem before a certain time or it would be deleted.
That's the problem, the robot would have to check at intervals because if your server went down at the moment it was checked your game could be deleted.
Personally, I delete all my games that are either crap or broken, which makes me look like I've never made any downloads.
I also think it's important not to delete anything (even the products with a broken link), just re-arrange them a bit. So I agree with Flava here, to archive the old ones would be the best solution.
I suppose archiving stuff would be the best idea. . . . I was just thinking from the perpsective of someone who has never been here before and visits the site, you go to the downloads page, click on a game and nada. Screens are broken, description is crappy, and the download doesn't even work. It just kind of gives the site an unprofessional apperance, which I know isn't the fault of the people who have designed the site, but of the people who have submitted stuff. Then there's still the issue of the weird genre selection, we don't need platform and Platformer and 2 rts.
