I've been trying for quite a LONG time now to create an solid and efective way to make behaviors, and orders, as well as player positioning, and formations.
I'll use the RTS example (knowing the sports one can be pretty mush like it. (formations "defence", "atack", "that special formation you created so the players go around the oponents".)
Ok.
Is there a solid and effective way to make formations?
For example: There are 10 Soldiers scatered around the frame. After you select them all and press 1, they form upin to lines of 5 independant of the direction they are moving in so it looks like this:

I think you get the idea.
(NOTE: when I ask if it's possible to make that 2X5 position, I'm also asking if it's possible to make any other position as well.)

Maybe if you pick one player, like the captain or the quarterback, and set the other players around him for the formations. That would be what I would do. So if you pick "attack formation" or whichever, have the individual players start to move towards their new positions relative to the captain.
Very cheap ASC pictures:

O x
x x

So by selecting the formation, you'd have one guy move to the top 'x', and so on.

I supose detectors would work, but I tryed some times and after the guy get's to his coresponding detector or waypoint he starts "vibrating" around the destination pixel.
How would you make that stop?
