Does anyone know if this is a good music composing program? I've heard samples, and it sounds like it's capable of doing some amazing stuff, but I just wanted a second opinion before I go out and by a 500$ program.

I have it - it is vv good BUT I would say it takes a bit of time to sus it out. Depends what you want it for etc...
to start press any key ...... where's the ANY KEY??

You can do pretty much anything in Cubase, as it's the most... compatible program out there. An important note, however, is that with the right person behind the keyboard, he can make an amazing music sample with most programs... I mean, there are even amazing midis!
If you're absolutely SURE you're going to get that $500 back (spiritually, of course), go ahead and buy it. However, if you as many people here have mostly been playing around with ModPlug and similar, you might want to get your hands on a demo or something to try it out first. Cubase has an almost silly amount of functions, and my bet is you won't use 1 % of them. Unless you are a semi-professional music maker already, of course. Then go ahead and buy it!

Its a great program, I have that, as well as Live 5.
If you want something easier to use, get Ableton Live 5.
If you want to make music along with Videos, and other things, get Cubase SX

Oh, and that's right. I guess it much depends on your willingness to download pirated software. SUMGOO says it's a great program, since he has that, as well as Live 5 (which happens to cost about as much). I doubt SUMGOO is a professional music maker. He probably downloaded both the softwares, and thus he can't actually tell if you should pay $500 for it.
Another VERY, VERY important aspect when talking about the cost, is VST-plugins. I'm not kidding you when I say that you may very well have to pay two or three times the amount you paid for Cubase SX, to get a decent range of high-quality VST instrument plugins. So even if you own a legal copy of Cubase, you'll probably have to get illegal at one time or another. Or very poor.

I've been using Fruityloops. I like the interface, but most of the instruments sound to synthesized. I've been hunting for a demo, but I can't find one.  Can anyone help me out?

Cubase is worth every cent. It's one of the few music editors out there that actually lets you write music in SHEET MUSIC instead of trying to write numbers that are somehow supposed to correspond with notes (but if you want to do that, you can do that too).
If wishes were fishes then we'd all smell like ladies' underwear.

There are quite a few music editors that allow you to write sheet music. I though it was only mod trackers that forced you to fiddle about with numbers.
Cubase is definitely worth it, but you will find that in order to get your hands on really good realistic sounding instruments, you are probably going to be forking out another couple of hundred bucks on VST software.

My uncle has it, and he uses it professionally to edit music and such. He gave a copy to me, but I personally don't use it. Seems like a program though...
