I've decided to record my dreams in pixel art form.

This is the first one of my drawings, which is me and a girl looking out from the broken hull of a huge ship just before it sinks.

As you can see, the main idea is there, but it just needs a little improvement. So... how could I improve it? I know some of the colours need readjusting, and also the shading of the figures is a bit off. Anything else?

Criticism welcome, as always.

i understand youre shading concept, but it looks a little like wool for thier pants and shirt, try a different shading technique. i like the idea and style however.

Very positive outlook

I quite like it, and the shading is pretty good! Maybe some brown shading on selected bits of the wood of the ship?

Other than that I think it's pretty cool! Nice job

Why is there a huge black abyss around the whole pic. I can see that it’s supposed to be in the mood but having that hunormous black area to the right isn't all that necessary.

I would have to agree on the shading as well. The random pixels look a bit careless. Also, on your back there's almost a square of darkness. There's a corner on your right shoulder and a corner on your left shoulder. Fill in those areas to make it look like a real back.

The moon reflection should extend all the way down and not just stop suddenly. You also might want to add some more intermediate tons on the moon light surrounding the moon, it’s a bit abrupt.

Well, that’s my thoughts, good luck

I know what you mean, but it doesn't have to be that big...I don't know, I guess it doesn't really matter...

Actually I was planning on making the black area a bit bigger. When you understand aspects of design you will understand Hishnak.

For those interested, I updated it a bit, made the random pixels a bit less random and improved the outline of the wooden bits:

I like it. The only suggestion I have is that you blend the back of the shirts with the pitch black a little more, perhaps by adding a darker shade to act as a buffer. Right now, the backs look very unnatural. Either that, or make the hair dark, too.

Maybe add some different shades of blue where the wood out-line disapears. Some parts where it disappears on the sky looks strange. There's still just a little corner cut out on the left of your back.

"When you understand aspects of design you will understand Hishnak."

It seems you're trying to insult me...such drama O_o

Just a rough edit to show you a bit, its basically just to layer your collors gradually into the black.

Cleaned a bit to show you that with the graduall bit it will stand out more, and added the boat you talked about i doubt this is how you pictured it though.

Just keep your lighting the same, dont be affraid to add more colors to add depth. Adding more colors makes others stand out more. If you look at this it looks like the moon is glowing because its gradually getting dark instead of white to black.

Yep, we are. I know it doesn't really make sense, but that is exactly how I saw my dream.

Thanks Matt, I'll try that technique with the sea next time I update it (when I get time). I guess I was focusing on making everything look really dark, and I forgot to add the shades in between.
