There's plenty of legit reasons to rip DVDs. Music Videos, portable devices, etc.
There's also plenty of free tools out there to help you do it.
(old id game) + 9.org is a good place to start.

you don't have to use one program to do it all.
you could use one to rip the dvd video (into vob or mpeg2)
then use another to convert that file into an avi.
i know cinemaforge converts into many different video files.

Yeah, ive been messing around with some stuff like that. I found one program that seemed like it should work, but it always has an error at about 10-15%

Ive got various programs and they all work,
TMPGEnc (to convert files to mpeg or mpeg2 (videocd or dvd)
TMPGEnc (to write to a dvd and to create menus and such
Virtualdub (does similar stuff but can rip sound from files, you need to make an mp3 at 128kbs to make a dvd apparently)
Cinemaforge (converts to and from tons of formats)
ive even got one called Dvd2AVI, but i'm not sure if ive ever used it.

But the DMCA makes it ILLEGAL . Unless you are in one of the backwards nations where consumer rights have a higher priority than the copytight owners.

Unfortunately not. Some years ago, the swedish parliament passed through a law which made circumventing copy protection illegal.
