I want to make a zip for a folder, no winrar crap or anything like that. Just a zip. I've been using all kinds of programs for extracting files, so I havent had a problem, but just now the icon for creating a new zip archive, in the 'new' section on the right click tool-bar has disappared. How do I get it back?
Especially that.

lol, right click your files to zip, most usual packing programs have a right-click menu.
Btw, RAR is not crap, just another packing format that compresses better, and with WinRAR it's as easy as making a zip AND a rar.

Ive rarely seen a difference between Zip and Rar sizes. Although any i have seen have been in Rar's favour (ei always smaller) however it's never all that much.
maybe it depends what you compress though i guess.

AndyUK, probably because you were compressing small files, for larger files it makes a lot of difference.

7zip is great for compressing many similar files, I've heard. I guess that's why people use 7z for ROMs and stuff, where they put many similar versions of the same ROM in the same archive.

Ive rarely seen a difference between Zip and Rar sizes.
Rar can compress further than zip, sometimes. Larger files have a tendency to have more bits that the rar algorithm can compress better than zip, but with smaller files or when compressing already-skinny file formats it's no better (or sometimes slightly worse). However, it's always slow as hell.
To be honest it's a pretty crap format that only got popular because people liked the split function for sharing shit on newsgroups. For small files zip is better, and for large files there are better options like 7z.
