I am thinking about making a little game that seriously spoofs the shit out of a famous videogame franchise. My main concern is that Konami doesn't come after my ass! If I change names and locations, and use all of my own graphics / story / and sound, is there any chance of copyright infringement? The game uses a totally new hero that I made up, but the gameplay mechanics will (hopefully) be a lot like said established game series.
It's an idea I've had kicking around for a long time, and I think some people would enjoy it. I'm usually opposed to working on two games at once but I need a lil' breather from Equin Legacy.
What do you all think?

Sounds like a pretty fun idea! Yeah they can't touch you if you don't intend on selling it or use the character names etc.. especially if you're also using your own graphics!!
Well, I just put the preview up here now. It's called Hastlevania: The Quest for Shuteye. Basically some guy buys a new house and it just so happens to be next door to Dracula's castle. And of course now is the time every 100 years that he wakes up, lol. The problem for our hero is that all he wants to do is sleep, but Drac's a noisy fellow and keeps him up all night. That's why he enters the castle in the first place.

I wonder if I can even use "Dracula"? Maybe it's one of those general domain deals.
I just REALLY need to make a friggin' awesome custom platform engine because I want the gameplay to shine on this one more than ever.

Personally I don't think Konami would be bothered even if you DID.. ¬_¬
What they gunna do, sue you for your small worth? No offense obviously - they're a massive corporation and wouldn't be interested in 200,000 of your local currency I'm sure.. and they wouldn't get that much anyway if you had it.
And yes Dracula is a public domain character now...
Fun fact: the makers of the first ever "Dracula" movie, Nosferatu (i think it was made in 1907), got sued by the people managing the estate of the author, and all copies where ordered to be destroyed. But later on one turned up in an attic somewhere (i think Canada) and it has since become a classic
