Double the amount of available memory would surely be useful for a sandbox game full of physics and textures and everything, right? Plus you have the 360's graphics card running the show. I think I know which version I'll be getting... the PC one! If there is one.

The graphics card will be doing the large majority of the work. It's 256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz, that's GDDR3, should be able to take the strain. Though it doesn't give it much room to 'breathe' considering.

Was a bit of a waste only sticking 256mb of not-particularly-good RAM in the PS3... but then I suppose the price would have been doubley outrageous

PS3 runs fine with NFS Carbon and that's got heaps of stuff going on, only lag I saw was in emulating GTA san andreas for PS2

Got to be honest, I'm a little disappointed. They keep on revisiting Liberty City, so if the game uses the same map, I'll know where to go, which will ruin the fun of exploration.

That said though, when they released the first trailer of San Andreas, it only showed footage of Los Santos, rather than the entire game... maybe there's more to the game than is initially shown?

I heard they are redesigning the whole city, and I'm pretty sure that the game will be bigger than SA, there's no point on switching to a new engine if it can't render a bigger world than the old one.

This isn't the same Liberty City as in the other games, apparently.
In fact it's more of a New York City - which explains why you can see the well-known landmarks from new york, including the statue of Liberty. Although, Liberty City was always based on New York anyway.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the game had Liberty City, Vice city AND san andreas all put into it - would make it super huge and it'd certainly be a possibility. But as far as I am aware, Liberty City is a completely revamped city. Only the name is the same.

As for the PS3 RAM:

* 256MB X DR Main RAM @3.2GHz
* 256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz

Isn't that 512mb RAM in total? Same as the Xbox 360?

Xbox has 512mb plain old GDDR3 RAM for the whole system and 10 MiB super friggin fast eDRAM for the GPU.

Not that I have my own PS3 or 360 mind. Or my own Wii for that matter!

That has been done you know. In "The Getaway" on PS2 you play in Lodon.

And, I hope GTA4 isn't any bigger than San Andreas. It got really confusing, my small brain couldn't memorize the entire map. I Do hope they got different times of the year. Like Winter, Spring, Summer ...

256 MB normal RAM, 256 MB video RAM.

All I know is that sprite-based games won't get ported so much because there isn't enough RAM. Which just miffs my riddles, I tell you.

I have a gut feeling DirectX 10 style shaders, HD textures and a proper physics engine will need that 64x more memory.
