I've got my filthy hands on Vista (import from America, it's like half price). Don't know if I really want to upgrade just yet though 'cuz I've got some issues with it still...
- Can you turn off that piss annoying security thing that crops up whenever you virtually do anything?
- Can you uninstall bloatware like IE7 and WMP?
- Can you instal it on a Fat32 drive?
- Can you turn off the way newly opened Windows sort of fly into the screen? Or just make it look and function like XP?
I suppose lastly and most importantly; is Vista secure? It's sort of paramount really.
I don't like Vista because its a resourse hog. I don't like microsoft because they won't make directX 10 for Xp. Just recently, it was revealed by a former microsoft employee, why vista sucks. You won't belive this. Click the link http://clintonforbes.blogspot.com/search/label/INTERCAL
Personally, I like Vista MUCH more than XP. Yes, you can turn off that annoying User Account Control - gets much more comfy that way :3
I hate XP's design, XP's lags (believe it or not, Vista lags less on my PC) and XP in general.
While the design can be a little fixed with StyleXP (Eclipse <3 <3 <3) the lags, unstable work and awful security make me cry.
Vista is not as secure as it's supposed to be. Some XP spyware works perfectly here... I've even caught a virus once which wasn't detected by any antivirus system... (though got rid of it)
You don't have to uninstall IE7 and WMP - just use alternatives. To be honest, I like using WMP for music - it's quite comfy. Of course for video it's better to use LA/BS/VLC (I use VLC)...
As for IE7 - I recommend installing Maxthon. Everything working in IE works in Max and it's much more stable/secure/comfy/whatsoever...
There should be a way to turn off window flying if you don't like it I guess... But I like it (though it's stolen from Mac OS )
So, well, a lot of people hate Vista, but I like it much more than XP. (I'm using Vista for a year now, starting with prealpha, switching to beta, RC1, RC2 and now licensed )
And, of course, Microsoft sux because it doesn't release DX10 under XP...
BTW, I recommend checking out Longhorn. Though it's server OS, it's a good personal OS without some things people hate in Vista. It runs smoother, faster, and is very comfortable. Maybe I'll switch to it someday...
Dunno if anyone's already mentioned this, cos I've not got time to read the whole thread, but the INTERCAL thing about Vista actually wasn't true. The writer admits it was a joke at the bottom of the page.
"PS. This is the second post in my series of attempted humour about Microsoft. I don't know what has come over me in the past week. A few days I was picking at monkey-boy Steve Ballmer, a completely unprovoked attack on the idol of Visual Basic programmers world-wide."

LOL I'm so gullable. I still don't care that much for Vista's new features. I wasn't aware that Longhorn was also being released, if it supports Direct X 10 which i don't see any reason why it would, I would deffinately be interested in it.

I wouldn't go as far as giving a complete one-sided answer, as LIJI likes to do (OMG EVRYTHING ABOUT M$ $UCKSLOL), but I will have to say that Microsoft is letting a lot of chances to survive go here. The only reasons why they're still here is because people are afraid to switch, and companies/businesses are afraid to switch. <_<
1) I can get a free personal copy because my school has some sort of Microsoft deal that means hey get -everything- MS makes for a fixed price.
2) To make use of DirectX 10 - though i personally think this is a scam to make people buy Vista, i really dont see why it shouldnt be able to run on XP
so right now, i dont have a reason to upgrade because i can't afford a new computer just yet.. i've used a Vista system before though and it seemed really nice, but i kinda got the feeling of "what's the fuckin' point?"
seems like MS updates their stuff just to seem like they're ahead of the competition
Having DX10 on Vista only, is Microsoft's excuse for only releasing Halo 2 on Windows Vista, so it basically is a money scam.
Vista in general though, after having used it for as long as I have, and on multiple systems, you really just have to get the operating system, and use it without good nor bad intentions and the system will feel very smooth and full proof, especially when multitasking. Multitasking on Windows Vista is extremely nice, because you never get issues with windows hitching up when they're minimized or restored, and when you use Alt+Tab or the 3D flip, even loading windows will always come straight forward, and you never get that white re-draw issue that causes windows to get really badly ripped and torn.
Vista is a stable and great operating system, like I said, you just need to use it without expecting to much or to little from it.
Now Flip 3D I think adds absolutely nothing. Though MS really needed to add a nice window manager system (it was Expose that got me into OSX) it doesn't half feel like a convulted and slow experience.
And I reaaally don't like the new way the start menu works. I never thought that to be broken. Always worked fast, everyone knows how to use it etc. Bad design decision. Unless you can change it?
Only thing I've heard about Vista is that it's the same old thing, but with ridiculous 3D and alpha channel effects, and an over-protective security system that takes away all power from the user. Personally, I want to wait a while before buying Vista. I just can't see the benefits at the moment.
Can you make it look like Windows XP looking like Windows 98? I'm being absolutely serious, too.

lol, a buddy of mine is having Vista, and he says it's pretty stable and fast enough, but he has some horrible things going on too, like hardware not working (Nintendo Wi-Fi?! Playstation USB controller?! Those SHOULD work!) and software not working well (IE7 is slow as hell, ZSNES plain crashes, a development program we use won't work under certain configurations).
I say, if your hardware is dear to you, wait a bit until there have been enough updates.
