It had to do with tensions between the Austrian-hungarians and the Serbs. The Serbian nationalist Vladimir Princip killed the Austrian-hungarian crown prince Franz Ferdinand. Afterwards, the Serbs refused to turn him over to Austria-hungaria. So Austria-hungary declared war on Serbia. Because of military pacts, Britain, Russia and France supported the Austrian-hungarians while Germany and the Ottoman Empire (the Turks) supported Serbia.
