9 dead apparently, top news post on WP too. Back in 2001, the Minnesota Dept of Transport highlighted potential dangers such as a weakness in the steel due to warping and a lack of redundancy in the truss (I think that means no "backup" structure in place). That's 6 years ago and they did nowt about it.
Volcanoes and stuff don't bother me, but I get annoyed when incompetence causes pointless death.
On the radio up in Boston, they're saying that the Longfellow bridge (which is 100 years old this past month) has only been worked on 3 times, the last was a $2 mil upgrade in 2001.
There was also a really bad bridge collapse in California years ago, the top half of the bridge collapsed and crushed everybody on the bottom half.
I guess it's just one of those things that can happen at any time, you just have to hope that it doesn't.

A few years ago(2001 I think) a bridge fall here in Portugal and killed about 60 people. A few months after the tragedy they found a report from 1997 saying the bridge was unsecure, so try to guess how the families of the victims felt.
