Is anyone getting it/preordered it? I'm not a huge fan but I buy the games as they are pretty good. Cannot decided weather to preorder number 3 though. Have they upped the graphics much since Halo 2 on PC?? From the poor screenies I have come across in my travels it doesn't look like the beatbox thirty six hundred is being used to its fullest potential, which is very strange as this is probably the biggest game ever to hit xbox.
Oh COME, ON. Halo 3 is undisputedly going to be THE best multiplayer online game to date. It may not be acquired to everyone's tastes and people will have their own favourites set out already - but compared with those of whom this game appeals to, that's going to be quite a minority.
Seriously, I dont even have an Xbox360 (yet), but the additional stuff they are throwing in this game is actually INSANE. For starters, you can record entire games, playing the back from any persons' perspective or explore on 'free-cam', at any speed or frame rate and even upload them online etc.
That, in itself, is something that no other game offers - and it'll be an awful long time before any other games do I'm sure. How cool?!! That's one of around 50+ things that will make this game the best selling and ultimate game ever, to date. I reckon I'd even put money on it - there's nothing that they've left out on this one guys.
Halo one was good. I didn't like halo 2. Grunts are my favorite part of the game.
Seriously, thats genius, having the enemies be funny short cowards with high pitched voices. Hours of entertainment.
I doubt it. Firstly it can't be an online multiplayer king if you're stuck without a keyboard and mouse.
Team Fortress 2. Possibly the most perfect online multiplayer I've had the joy of playing. Puts the consoletard Halo 3 beta to shame, it was great but ultimately cut down compared to PC shooters. (story of consoles life I suppose!)
Also Slink - apparently they've upped the graphics too, and I played the demo a little way back, and even then the gfx were much better than H2. Having a HDTV will be a must when playing this.
Enemies also 'think' much better in campaign (like if two of them are together, they both do the same thing, and higher commanding enemies tell others to do stuff, like all throw grenades! ) and you can be brutes and marines and all sorts in multiplayer!

Well besides the frame rate thing you could do that in Counter strike source.
I can't imagine that being a heavily used feature. Sounds good and all for a few minutes. It's not like it's going to single handedly be the best game ever for it.
Halo 3 will probably be one of the best multiplayer games on a CONSOLE - but even then it hardly does anything that Halo 2 doesn't in the multiplayer arena. They've thrown in a map editor tool, which apparently is the only thing about the game that isn't any good (according to some blogs I read).
It's going to sell well because people want to know what happens to Master Chief - I already watched all the endings on YouTube and they've still not really killed the story off (Microsoft will probably suck the franchise for all the money they can get).
If I had a 360 then I'd definately buy it - but I'd rather play Counter-Strike or Team Fortress 2 on a PC
@Jimmi: I knew someone would say that, when I tried to explain how it wasn't the most obvious selling point ¬_¬
"How cool?!! That's one of around 50+ things that will make this game the best selling and ultimate game ever, to date."
It's annoying how this community rips eachother apart for looking forward to stuff and being enthusiastic etc. It's just depressing having these kinda conversations :\
Thing is I like Halo as a series. It's nice, a little cliched and it's nothing new anymore. But it's my fave console FPS. I just can't get excited for Halo 3. The beta looked cack, the full version is only slightly improved, unless you unlock "make this game look as good as other 360 games" when you complete it?
In the end it's your typical console FPS. Cut down controls, simplified AI that don't require as quick reactions as PC shooters, extremely linear, loading times to watch girls go by to, "in your face" style characters (a little too GoW for me thx) with a diluted storyline to appear to the masses. On top of that the gameplay itself is feeling old now. It's as if they've taken the now 6 year old Halo 1 and added dual wield. And forget the unique and entrancing environments from Halo 1
It's like the Matrix all over again. A unique and genuinely good attempt at something new to start with, then fan service for sequels. I guess FF7 falls into this as well.

lol, good one, you really sounded like a retarded 360 fanboy.
@Andy: Yeah I guess, I think that comment from Phizzy just started me off there ¬_¬
Apparently the case for the limited edition is a bit flimsy and the CDs have been known to fall out of place - meaning you might have scratches on the CD or something. So I suggest not buying the limited edition one (or you can send the scratched CD to Microsoft and they send you a replacement)
Despite the fanboy halo haters I got this game, I felt it was a refined version of both 1 and 2. I was able to appreciate the amount of effort that they put into making this game as a result I enjoyed it.
Lol, best online game ever. Sorry but have you played Battlefield Nam or '42? You know, the PC versions; thought the console versions of BF2 weren't that bad (Just the games were too small).
Halo is and always will be a well made FPS. Nothing more/less. It doesn't deserve all the hype it gets. I'm a ravid FPS fan and there's really nothing Halo did that others didn't do. (Recharging shields and only having 2 weapons doesn't count).
Now if the TRUE Halo had come out, they yes, that could have been the best online game ever. (Was going to be an MMO FPS essentially; this was shortly after they made the switch from 3rd to first person. I still have the huge PC gamer article about it.) But that died a long time ago, and it's such a shame that they've never even looked at that Idea again; considering they supposibly had it mostly done.
But yes, standard FPS through and through.
Oh, and apparently Timesplitters 2 HD is coming out soon, SCORE!

Nah, these are better than BF imo, for PC:
Black Hawk Down
Medal of Honour (AA)
Unreal Tournament
CoD2
I played halo 1 demo on the pc, it was nice to suicide bomb the other peoples base in that weird flying vehicle, but the actual character movement just seemed way too slow to me.

Well, besides Flava.
Seriously we should play some time.. Every time you're on a server it's always full so I can't join.
And Shab just brought up another good FPS - Timesplitters. I absolutely loved that game - brings back lots of great memories
At the end of the day there are lots of great games out there - Halo 3 is one of them. I don't think the hype is deserved, but I'm betting it's a must have game for 360 owners.
Jadore le PC versions! I just dislike console FPS's's's as I find Mouse + Keyboard far easier to use. I hear Metroid Prime 3's controls are awesome though
They are as long as you're used to using the Wii. I've been stoked about the FPS potential on the Wii; so far Prime 3 is the only one to deliver on that potential; but it's not really an FPS.
I hear Force Unleased is going to have Wiimote Saber control. Here's to hoping lucasarts gets it right! (Unfortunatly, their previous console record suggests otherwise. Batlefront being developed by an outside company.)

Anyways, so I got playing Halo 3 last night. Thought we could have a 4 player coop since it's what Bungie announced. But to be awkward it's 4 player online coop, but supports 4 player everything else.
The single player itself is dull. You'd need to be stocked up on Red Bull to keep yourself awake through it. Even coop (which thank God they fixed) couldn't save it. The intro menu was confusing as hell at first. Are cutscenes deliberately trying to be mimicking the worst of B-movies? And why do the human faces just suck?
On the other hand Big Battle mode was fun as hell. 4 of us on one screen (our mini army) took on 12 other people on that giant desert map with the Elephant. That was great. For local multiplayers this game is going to be awesome. I couldn't play it online on my own though, it really is a party FPS.
It does not deserve this hype whatsoever. It's a shit singleplayer and an alright (when compared to proper multiplayer games) multiplayer.
Just to make me sound less like a Sony fanboy... I loved Halo 1 it's possibly the best console FPS I've played and still play today
What's wrong with 1280x720? You need a huge screen for higher resolutions to make a difference. Above 50" with a 2 meter viewing distance I recall.
Well, there's one bad thing about 720p. The PS3 can't convert 720p to 1080i, so people with old HDTVs that only supports 1080i is left with 480p quality.
I just don't remember when I last played an FPS, let alone one that uses pixel precision sniper rifles and the likes in a resolution even near 1280*720.
LOL at the comic. A journalist mate o' mine is off to interview Kaz in November, not related to much either! But it had to be said!
Ok, I recieved Halo 3 from PLAY in the post yesterday morning, I was unable to play it because I went to Hunstanton for the day. I had a quick go on it last night, finished the first level.
Been playing it to death today, I think I'm now about a quarter of the way through the game. My opinions: Graphically it is clearly the best version of all the Halos, but it doesn't look anywhere near as good as Gears of War, and I think that deep down thats what people wanted. More stuff happens onscreen which is so much better. I haven't tested out multiplayer properly yet as I'm not on XBox Live, but I wandered the maps by myself and thought that every single one was well designed.
I've played the original Halo, never touched Halo 2, so I cannot pass judgement on it aside from screenshot comparisons. It looks great, but it doesn't look brilliant. And the gameplay is very familiar. It feels closer to Halo 1 than 2 for me in terms of gameplay but again I've never played Halo 2.
Overall Opinion: I think you should give it a shot. You might well be surprised. I'm really enjoying it at the moment.
Besides, Halo 3 is outputting at 1080p on our set. It says 720p on the box but the TV is showing a much crisper 1080 lines. Probably down to the 360's scaler.
720p upscaled to 1080p will look the same on a 1080p TV as it would in 720p on a 720p TV.
720p and 1080p both look fine on my TV, though 720p looks slightly blurry with lots of solid colours.
We're not talking 1080p here We're talking about early CRT HDTVs. A few would only support 480p and 1080i but not 720p. Since the PS3 can't convert 720p to 1080i people with such tvs will be limited to SD resolution.

I'm not going to buy it. It's good for a little bit till you realise you already own Halo 2 or a similar FPS with cliched story, recycled gameplay and find it technically and visually quite an undernourished game.
Until it hits the bargain bin or something.
The low resolution is poor for sniping long distance.
1280x720 is fairly standard for a modern console game =P Except for Wii which is still in the stone age with 640x480.
How many console games do you know that render in 1920x1080? (which is the next step up in HDTV resolutions) Virtua Tennis 3 is one. Because of the PS3s lack of upscaling to 1080i/p, Sony suggests developers to implement alternative 960x1080 resolution modes in their games in order to support 1080i/p without a heavy performance hit.

Don't turn this into a thread about the PS3 or the Wii please.
Stay on topic and all that, you know.

You forgot gameplay.
You're right! We're whining so much about graphics that we forget - is the game actually FUN?

Well I still havn't received my copy of Hale 3. I bet I've been ripped off. Better be here when I get up on Monday. If not it serves me right for buying from eBay, really.

Personally I found the game to be more enjoyable/fun than the previous games. It seemed to have more variety.
But thats just my opinion, since many other people will find it hard to play since its popular.

lol, stupid Halo noobs. Lower resolution isn't necessary for proper HDR unless your graphics engine sucks monkey cock. And people are favouring silly lighting effects over poly count these days, mister Fred!
Edited by the Author.
Honestly, it's weak that Halo 3 isn't the full 720p resolution. Microsoft did say that all 360 games were to be rendered in at least 720p. So far four games are rendering below that. Two, Call of Duty 3 and Tony Hawk Project 8, are Activision titles. However, the most notable are Project Gotham Racing 3 and Halo 3, both published by MS... Some say Tomb Raider Legends and Perfect Dark Zero renders at lower resolutions as well, but all seem to refer to the same source on that (a guy counting pixels on his tv...)

Probably because lighting effects are more noticable than extra polygons. Actually more polygons don't always make a game look better, which is the main thing this generation. Games wont have been technically impossible on older consoles. Just the silly graphics effects and higher resolutions. Real time shadows and HDR etc.
Firstly. HDR is the dogs bollocks IMO. I'll take a lower resolution for HDR any day, so long as theres FSAA going on too. It is weak that Halo is a low resolution yet still has slow downs in areas. For a flagship game it is a little bit poor.
That said the 360 scaler makes up for that... almost.
And yes it is all about the gameplay. Shame that Halo 3's gameplay is so tired :|
I personally see absolutely nothing wrong with Halo 3 except for that it feels to short. Aside from that, the stunningly beautiful graphics and perfectly smooth gameplay, all work together in an amazing game. I love it, and it's the best console game I've played to date.
Now I'm just waiting for The Orange Box to come in the mail October 11th. Pre-ordered it, Team Fortress 2 and Portal are going to be the highlights of that pack. Not to mention the beta of Team Fortress 2 is sweet as all hell. This is without a doubt, a good year for First Person Shooters! Halo 3 and Team Fortress 2 don't exactly break the mold, but we still have Crysis and Unreal Tournament 3 coming out later. This is a good year indeed.
I've been watching video reviews for Halo 3 now and it does look rather tasty. It had better arrive in the post tomorrow. Whats this "Orange Box" anyway? Something to do with Half Life?
I'm holding out till they give us HL1 Source or whatever that update was called.
By far it's the best deal in gaming. It's like £5 for 4 (going on a predicting limb here) legendary games and 1 average one.
PS. that shot of the brute (is it?) infront of Master Chef looks crap. It's like they took a late 90's computer game and upped the res. The thing they're on looks like it's been through the Plastic Wrap filter. The enemy graphics look like they just googled "Textures" and threw them all on. and on the screenshots as a whole, it's like Bungie decided to only give certain objects shadows. No varying softness in the shadows? Seems a bit static.
I really hope Brandon didn't post them to show off the graphics.

Actually, FSAA isn't there either Microsoft need to find a flagship title that actually holds up to their own set specs (720p and FSAA)

I got the last achievement in Golden Axe today. What does this have to do with the thread? Nothing really, but it's an awesome game, even though it's upscaled from 320x224 resolution.

It finally came today! As I expected its a dodgy copy. The disk says NTSC JAP or something on it and the book is in both Jpanese and then in English text. Oh well. One thing I was supprised at is that I have completed single player?! Already?! I was shocked at how short it was Never actually finished a Halo game before I only really play it for online matches. Which by the way I suck at. I mean I just seem to have incredibly bad luck wehn playing online. Even after all these years. =/
Microsoft does publish on the DS, even their Rare and (previously) Bungie could release games on Nintendo handhelds if they want to. It's just Wii and PS2/3 stuff that won't see them.
Bungie have a history of this. They were once Mac-only developers (Marathon anyone?), then bought out by MS and Halo became a FPS shooter instead of that online shooter (or whatever it was). Now they're free again till someone else buys them out!
As far as I am aware, Bungie and Microsoft still have a close deal so that Halo titles only appear on Xbox and such. The separation does mean that Bungie can develop multi platform titles now. I'm guessing that Microsoft wanted them to just create Halo games, whereas Bungie probably wanted to start new projects and stuff. That's my guess anyway.
I don't think he's talking graphics here. It's obvious from the videos that they had the levels going well, but hom much could that little DS processor have left for AI?
It's been done decently before (Hunters), but that's about it. Still, it does FPS better than the Psp (Which sucks cause there could be some awesome FPS action on the Psp if there were a decent way to control it).
Hunters is possibly the best control scheme for a non-PC FPS. It's very precise and quick. Halo is a much slower game so you the superior DS controls wouldn't be required.
A 2nd analogue nub (or better still, analogue sticks) could be one of the shortest oversights in recent gaming years.
As for the DS AI, even Hunters had a good AI, the bots were a challenge. And what's the say the game would just be an online shooter? Seeing Bungie can't make a good single player these days.
Back in the day of 2D games I was in love witht he Metroid games. Still am. But I just cannot get into ANY of the FPS Metroid games! I'm not a HUGE Halo fan but I like that game a LOT more than Metroid Prime etc. And I can't put ym finger on why that is.
When I had Hunters on the DS I found that I could noly play it for about 15 minutes at a time as after that length of time my finger would really start aching. CAnnot rememebr how I was holding it but I always had one finger holding up the DS... Too heavy!
