I think it should just be customizable. MMF1's was partially customizable, so you could add tools to the bar and similar things.
If they make it customizable in here, people can CHOOSE to make it a fully vertical, horizontal or taking-up-more-columns look.

You do know you can change the white into a different colour, don't you?
The picture editor of MMF2 is missing some tools and features that MMF1 had. The resize-tool really sucks. It rotates whole image and even badly. It is handy that I can rotate a selection in MMF1. And why some tools doesn't have the opacity sliderbar? Sometimes I shall need it with fill tool. MMF2 has only one selection tool. Bah, MMF1 had four and all of them was necessary for me. I really wonder why MMF2's picture editor misses so many good features of MMF1. Sometimes I can't understand Clickteam.
And the exit thing... I press accidentaly Esc. MMF2 asks that "Are you sure you want to cancel the changes?". Huh, the picture saved. Next time I press accidentaly the cross on top of the window. MMF2 asks same question also now. But last time I accidentaly press Cancel button instead of OK because they are so close together. This time MMF2 doesn't ask the saving question so I lost my work. Damn!
i rarely use the mmf editors, i find them lacking in almost every department, i use GFX Gale for all spriting i do, i only use the editor to animate.
but MMF2 editor is better than MMF1 for the simple reason it doesnt crash every 2 seconds, other than that it just seems like a new layout

No matter how many chances you give the mmf1 picture editor it's still an unusable buggy piece of crap. I kept CnC installed on my computer for drawing purposes until MMF2 came out.

MMF1's editor is only buggy and unusable for a select few people, though.
