Hey, I was thinking about this a little while ago and I think there might be some truth to it. It seems that nowadays I play my 'real' gaming systems a lot less in favor of trying to make my own stuff. I just got a brand new DS for the first time last week but all I'm thinking about is my next game I have in my head, and how that will likely eat up all my free gaming time. Back before I could really make games I used to buy NES games and play them until I won them, but now it seems my stack of unsolved games just continues to steadily rise. The last recent games I've won offhand I think were Windwaker and Aria of Sorrow, and that was years ago!
Anybody else have this problem? It's like if you had the opportunity to do either would you opt for your existing console games or make your own mostly?

DXF Games, coming next: Hasslevania 2- This Space for Rent!
Truth be told, I even don't play much "real" games. I've sort of given up on console games, mostly because I can't be arsed to pay for an entirely new system every five years (and because I've got better things to waste my money on). I was going to get a Wii, but I just never did. I guess I'm just more of a PC guy. Buuuut I don't think it's got anything to do with myself being a gamemaker.
I don't think playing games interferes with my klik work either. At least not the way you described it, Del. I usually play games only when I'm too tired to do anything creative or constructive anyway.
Big video game fan here, but sometimes my creativity gets the better of me and I have to make a game instead of playing a retail game. Prolly play more then I make though. A LOT more.
I'm in the same situation. I can't play any game for more than 2 days.
I bought freedom fighters, it's was getting really cool but after a couple missions I died and I never played the game since then.
I find that I'm a lot more critical of games than most people. I read about people enjoying games like Oblivion and all that, but I cant play it for the bugs and design problems. I bought Metroid Prime 3 expecting, well, Metroid. But it's just something different altogether.
I don't play many games to begin with. I'm only sticking with the best games (Mario Galaxy, Orange Box) from now on and focus my time on making rather than playing.
The last game I really got in to was Halo 2. Before that for about a year I never really played anything since my psone broke, apart from the odd PC game now and then..
Nowadays I have no patience or interest in any games or consoles, whatsoever. I get bored of them really easily no matter how good they are, and it's quite annoying really!
The only reason I like to play and make games here is because I appreciate the time and effort gone in to the things produced (by usually just one person!), and it's something to occupy my time for a couple minutes or hour or so once in a while from what I usually do on the computer... e.g. MSN or make sites n stuff
And it's quite a cool community on the whole! Aside from some odd idiosyncratic moron, there's some really decent people about.
I used to be the biggest gamer ever back in the days of Zelda: OoT and FF7... but hardly at all, any more.
I still play console games, there are some real good ones about still. But I have noticed I play a lot less console and retail games and a lot more free ones or emulator stuff. It's a bit of mix really, love em both .
