I don't know why but I'm thinking about getting one of these again.
But I want to play homebrew AND the latest commercial games? I don't care for illegally playing all the latest games since I'm not scum. What's all this hullabalooza about an M33 firmware? I've done a bit of research and it sounds like it's what I'm after. Can play commercial games, homebrew (Cave Story) and PS1 games right from the menu with no other silly apps running.
I just want a nice simple method of getting the above things to work. POSSIBLE? Because I'll order one off eBay as soon as.
It's slightly tricky to install the stuff, but yes, you can have all that stuff running straight from the XMB. You'd need to buy a PSP with firmware 1.5, or a firmware easily downgradable to 1.5.
Then you'd need to install CFW 3.52 M33, upgrade that to 3.52 M33-4, then upgrade that to 3.71 M33, upgrade that to 3.71 M33-3, and install the kernel for 1.5 homebrew. Everything would just run then but it'll take a fair amount of work seeing as you're not just keeping up with the regular updates...
You could potentially buy a PSP Slim but I think you need a fat PSP to get that homebrew-enabled. Also, I don't think they've got a display driver for it yet to make it run 1.5 homebrew. Newer homebrew stuff would work though, like Cave Story.
I think I can skip all that stuff out, you can buy M33 3.72 Slim PSP's off eBay. I'm hoping I just buy that, a few games and can then run around playing my fave PS1 games on the go.
Well it's rather tricky because the newer motherboards are designed to brick the psp if you try to install non official firmware or downgrade.
I had to buy a copy of gta liberty city stories to downgrade mine. (unpatched)
That's *SORT OF* what you should be looking for, only that's a slim PSP. The 1.50 kernel is blocked through hardware which means no support for homebrew designed for 1.50. If you buy a fat PSP with 1.50 firmware it's virtually impossible to brick it with the custom firmware updates.
If you're too lazy to do all the firmware updates, then look for a 3.71 M33-3 PSP, but make sure it's a big fat one (PSP-1000).
What exactly is a PSP capeable of? Emulation? If so what can it emulate and how well can it do it?

Emulation stuffs: Decent N64 emulation, perfect 16-bit and before console emulation (barring perhaps SNES mode7), almost perfect PSone emulation written by the kind people at Sony (UmJammer Lammy doesn't work properly, the guitar sounds aren't right ). It could potentially be emulating everything before it perfectly, it's just got to be coded right by the homebrew guys.
And no, they're not region locked. Except for UMD Video, I suppose, but that can be turned off in the custom firmware's recovery menu.
