I don't know why but I'm thinking about getting one of these again.
But I want to play homebrew AND the latest commercial games? I don't care for illegally playing all the latest games since I'm not scum. What's all this hullabalooza about an M33 firmware? I've done a bit of research and it sounds like it's what I'm after. Can play commercial games, homebrew (Cave Story) and PS1 games right from the menu with no other silly apps running.
I just want a nice simple method of getting the above things to work. POSSIBLE? Because I'll order one off eBay as soon as.
It's slightly tricky to install the stuff, but yes, you can have all that stuff running straight from the XMB. You'd need to buy a PSP with firmware 1.5, or a firmware easily downgradable to 1.5.
Then you'd need to install CFW 3.52 M33, upgrade that to 3.52 M33-4, then upgrade that to 3.71 M33, upgrade that to 3.71 M33-3, and install the kernel for 1.5 homebrew. Everything would just run then but it'll take a fair amount of work seeing as you're not just keeping up with the regular updates...
You could potentially buy a PSP Slim but I think you need a fat PSP to get that homebrew-enabled. Also, I don't think they've got a display driver for it yet to make it run 1.5 homebrew. Newer homebrew stuff would work though, like Cave Story.
I think I can skip all that stuff out, you can buy M33 3.72 Slim PSP's off eBay. I'm hoping I just buy that, a few games and can then run around playing my fave PS1 games on the go.
Well it's rather tricky because the newer motherboards are designed to brick the psp if you try to install non official firmware or downgrade.
I had to buy a copy of gta liberty city stories to downgrade mine. (unpatched)
That's *SORT OF* what you should be looking for, only that's a slim PSP. The 1.50 kernel is blocked through hardware which means no support for homebrew designed for 1.50. If you buy a fat PSP with 1.50 firmware it's virtually impossible to brick it with the custom firmware updates.
If you're too lazy to do all the firmware updates, then look for a 3.71 M33-3 PSP, but make sure it's a big fat one (PSP-1000).
What exactly is a PSP capeable of? Emulation? If so what can it emulate and how well can it do it?
Edit: Also, are they region locked?

Emulation stuffs: Decent N64 emulation, perfect 16-bit and before console emulation (barring perhaps SNES mode7), almost perfect PSone emulation written by the kind people at Sony (UmJammer Lammy doesn't work properly, the guitar sounds aren't right ). It could potentially be emulating everything before it perfectly, it's just got to be coded right by the homebrew guys.
And no, they're not region locked. Except for UMD Video, I suppose, but that can be turned off in the custom firmware's recovery menu.
They're pretty nifty machines. I used to have one, but homebrew was confusing as hell to use and the screen was faulty with bad ghosting. It's (apparently) much better now and games are really cheap.
And it has Cave Story
Wonder how Amiga emulation is now, last I tried it was really chuggy.

That's all I want.
I've been spoilt by my M3. Everything just shows up there, a few things need patching with DLDI but it's all so easy. Shame that the next handheld will probably have PSP style anti-piracy updates
Ive got cave story on my psp. It's the only game ive got on the memory stick currently! lol.
Oh by the way for some reason Amstrad cpc emulation isn't at 100% yet. Which amazes me since it can emulate psone games almost perfectly (some games crash)
But more popular formats will work better.
Ive found that Snes games with custom chips wont be at 100% speed with full frames. Like yoshi's island.
I think the emu programmers went for compatibility fist, speed second.
Still it's gotta be better than DS emulation. NES and all that are fine, some SNES runs okay but mostly it's pants. And the Cave Story DS port is taking toooo long.
How does it run with the PSP's 16:9 screen, can you flip between stretched and 1:1? (wait, isn't cave story's native res 640*480? does it even fit?!)
It's not stretched, and the original resolution was 320*240 I think. They just ported the original code and changed the output resolution to widescreen, static rooms have big black borders but scrolling areas just show more horizontally at once. It only causes a couple of bugs I think, things like enemies disappearing before they get all the way off the screen. Nothing that affects gameplay.
The DS version's a complete rewrite, isn't it? Probably won't be as good as the original anyway.
I think so. From the demo the collisions and movement were perfect though. It's just the screen size. It'll need to be shrunk for the DS which will mess up some bosses.
So long as you have one of them memory card readers with a Memory Pro Stick Ultra Duo Core 2 slot you can just plug in your Memory Pro Stick Ultra Duo Core 2 card and there you go IIRC the PSP has a standard USB port anyways. You can get them for a couple of pennies these days.
I'm actually quite impressed by the cost of Memory Pro Stick Ultra Duo Core 2 cards. 8gb for £50? Lovely stuff!
Aaaand just to clarify - If I buy one of these fat M33-3 PSPs I'll be able to run 1.5 f/w applications natively, without downloading or running any other jiggery-pokery?
And how's the web browser now? I probably won't be using it much other than to check email, but last time I used I just got an influx of memory problems!
But lets say I buy a different f/w PSP, how easy is it to get the mofo M33-3 on it?
If you need to downgrade to 1.5 first, then it could be tricky. If you get a 1.5 PSP though, you'd just need to download each update, put it on the memory stick and run it. You don't need to do anything special for it to show up, since they use the PSP's default updater application.
So I can just go shopping for a 1.5 system too, or any that can be downgraded back to 1.5 I guess. That widens the eBay options... hopefully to include a white PSP
There have been some on eBay recently. "mint" condition with 2gb memory card and all the right f/ws for £100, next day delivery. I was gutted when that one went! But I'm happy again now
A lil update. Getting it on Thursday. Got GTA:VCS, Tomb Raider Anniversary, Tales of Eternia, Disgaea (?), Riveria and FF Tactics for xmas too 4gb memory card arrived this morning but it's a bloody fake! Ordered an extra 2200mAh battery and that's a real one.
Very excited about all this just need a few more games and I'll be more than sorted!
The chap selling it says it has none! I worry about ghosting though. My first PSP was terrrrible with ghosting. Like having GTA trails enabled in every game.
The PSP arrived but it wouldn't play UMD stuff. Homebrew was fine though. So I just made a little brash decision - I went out and bought a PSP slim, got home, made a Pandora battery on the old PSP and spent a good 20 minutes teaching myself how to work it all!
I friggin love it. It's beautiful, the screen is immaculate, all my homebrews work, UMD dumps, UMD discs. Ah. Screw the DS and its (IMO) lacklustre year.
Already done. I've also put it in a warm room (laser might have been temp. broke due to the cold) and gone at it with a lens cleaning kit. The things so buggered.
I still haven't found a game as good as Dawn of Sorrow or New Mario. I know this year the DS had Phantom Hourglass and Pokemon that just stormed the charts. Weren't too keen though.
I used to sniff that when I was like 8 years old... and Johnsons Bee wax table polish spray. And brasso. It probably explains a lot of things now...

Hah, incapable of arguing well, or just a troll?
The touch screen, microphone and networking capabilities make the DS a nice console for new and unique gameplay experience.

Pfft, touch screen? I had a PDA once, that had a touch screen. All the games on that were weird 'spell this word as fast as you can' games, and I bet the DS is EXACTLY THE SAME. I used to be able to write 'goat' in under six seconds. That wasn't fun and neither is your stupid fucking NETWORKING CAPABILITIES.
