All credit to Konami/Wayforward for avoiding the temptation to make use of the DS features (shouting "BANG!" into the mic to fire your gun, for example!)
I'm finding it harder than I imagined to concentrate on both screens at once, but it there would be something wrong if I was complaining about a Contra game being too easy. The player sprite is also much larger in proportion to the screen than in previous games so it's easier to take a hit. I've played it twice and so far I'm up to Stage 6 on Normal difficulty. I love the way they've updated the 3D sections from the NES game.
It's early days, but right now I still believe Contra 3 is the peak of the series so far. Contra 3 > Contra: Hard Cops > Contra 4
Yea, I heard Zerotau did some sprite work for the game. I was even trying to recognise his style while I was playing the game.
By the way, Nick (who was in O³) now works for WayForward too. I don't think he did anything for Contra 4, though.
Thanks to the DS Lite's spongey d-pad, my left thumb is almost completely wrecked. How's yours?
Andy: I don't know how to interpret your post. You're either sticking up for a Contra game that neither of us mentioned, or you were just being plain hostile. You can send me a message if there's something that needs to be discussed, otherwise you're welcome to lose the attitude and join the conversation if you're genuinely interested in the Contra series.
I've not played all of the games, but probably most of them. I haven't played either of the PlayStation games. I'd love to play Legacy of War with the 3D glasses and everything, but as far as I've heard, it's nothing to get excited about.
Shab: Yea, Super Probotector was the ridiculous name given to the UK release of Contra 3/Spirits.
I really wish Contra 4 had an option to reconfigure the buttons. I'd much rather use a face button to switch weapon and L to use the grappling hook. My mid-air, weapon-switching leaps of death are not getting any less embarrassing..
Wow I never saw Nim get annoyed before ;_; I thought it was impossible. Ive never played contra but I just looked it up on google and it looks a treat ^^ the DS version anyway

Andy: no worries. Sorry I seemed to have over-reacted, then! If you like action games at all then definitely make time to check them out. They usually have very inventive bosses, especially the 16-bit games.
My friend and I just tried to play a 2-player co-op game and apparently you need two copies of the game (no wifi download).. weird
Andy, one thing you should know is that with Contra games (the one's I've played) it's one hit and you die. There's no lifebar, it's really old school. That's why the 30 lives with the Konami code was so important back then.
Nim, does the Konami code still work? Even if it didn't give you 30 lives, they must've put it in there for something.

I heard something about them adding a life bar to one of the old NES or arcade games and it turned out to be a terrible decision as far as fans were concerned.
Yes, the Konami code is still there, but it doesn't give you more lives; it only upgrades your current weapons and only works once per level/continue. If you try it again, it kills you! There's actually a bug you can exploit in order to get infinite lives.
LOL, dude I got it today it's so awesome I suck at it!!
I've died about 40 times (no lie) and can only get about midway through the 1st level on normal difficulty. You just have to laugh but it's so good you keep coming back for more regardless. They really kept it faithful to the original game. It looks friggin' beautiful too! Hidden surprise ground cannons never looked so good
Seriously speaking, how the hell did anybody win this game? I must be really rusty, but so far I'm getting some serious Ghosts n' Goblins flashbacks while playing it.
I got this and Dawn of Sorrow both for a little under my $50 gift card at Gamestop. What a good purchase these games were.

Duio, you just just got two of the best games made for DS for an amazing price! As for those turrets, try taking them out from diagonally above or below. Hold R to stand still while shooting at an angle. Contra has always been half about skill and half about memorising the enemy patterns. There's an element of random placing for the moving enemies but the turrets are always in the same place.
So far DoS is a lot more fun than PoR, but I'm sure this has a lot to do with me being a big fan of AoS.
Oh, and I forgot to mention it but the spreadshot is so much better in C4 than in the old games.
One thing though, what does the "C" power-up stand for? It looks like missiles but I never get them because they seem worse than the spread, fire, or machine guns.

Contra 4 is really friggin awesome. I've beated now easy, normal and over 25 Challenges! I think this is even better than any Contra game so far and I've played Probotector 1,2 and Super Probotector Alien rebels(Contra III). Game is really hard and it took long time to beat easymode but when I play it now - It's too easy, I usually finish it with over 10lives and no continues used. The best weapons are M-2 for basic combat and C-2 and F-2(F-1 suck :E) for boss battles. H-1/2 is also pretty good.
And btw Contra 4 contains also Contra 2 and lots of interviews and information of Contra games.
