Does anyone know how far it has come yet? I've heard of people running some PS2 games on an emulator, but I'd imagine we've still a long wait ahead of us 'til we get any sort of decent results? Or am I wonrg?

Certain games run well. I don't think it's worth bothering with properly, though.

you do know console emulation is illegal without the original disks or cartridges right?
and most nintendo, sega, microsoft, and sony games are protected content so its even illegal to host the roms online.

Don't panic, cec¿l! We can now discuss WHY I want to emulate a PS2 game. Okay - Heres the deal

I love Phantasy Star. The PS games were remade on PS2 and I want to play them. Unfortunatly for me, they were only ever releaed in Japan. I'm looking on eBay and have found a few copies and would love to buy them! BUT BUT BUT!!! How would I go about playing them?

First I thought emu, but it's sounding like it probably will not work. So what other options do I have avaliable to me? I could import a Japanese PS2, but would that be expensive? And where would I find one? Also, what kind of power cables etc would I need? It's all so much trouble, you can see what I turned to emulation first, yes?

But seriously, there must be a way I can play 'em. Can you buy region unlock disks to play imported games? Anyone any suggestions?

Well apparently you can get full speed with the right machine. Ive gotten games to run at full speed (but not 100% of the time) on my 2.6ghz core 2 duo. Enabling the 2 core support in Pcsx2 improves performance dramatically.

My old pentium 4 3ghz only ran Pcsx2 at only 6 frames per second...

If your PS2 is a slim flippytop thing, you can buy that SwapMagic and play imported games (and if you're the evil Andrew Ludford, STOLEN COPIED GAMES O_O).

I think it works with all PS2s, but it's easiest with the slim models.

I second the SwapMagic recommendation. The slide tool is easy to use once you get the hang of it. Basically you'll need to remove the faceplate on your disc drive, and then use the slider tool to manually open the drive in order to switch discs. It sounds a lot scarier than it is and unless you're an idiot, there's no way you can damage your system with it. I used to use it all the time to play import versions of DDR and it worked like a charm. Don't know if it will play "backups" or not, but it certainly works with legitimate Japanese discs.

If full speed PS2 emulation was possible*, do you really think Sony would release the 40 gb PS3 without PS2 backwards compatibility?

* with current consumer computer technology

I've seen one but couldn't get the rom. Because they're illegal

All I wanted was to run a PS2 game on my comp. I bought that game, kinda, split the cost in half with a friend, but he didn't like the game.

No. When you buy a PS2 it's YOURS. It's perfectly legal to fit a mod chip in it.

The problem is the bios on the mod chip. Some mod chips may use hacked versions of the official bioses. Supplying a mod chip programmed with such a bios would be illegal. Dumping the bios of the console you own, patching it to run imports/copies and then putting it on the mod chip may be legal. The Xbox mod chips work like this.

Others may patch the original bios directly. That may be legal or illegal depending different countries jurisdiction. I believe this is the method the PS2 mod chips use.

PS3 is perfectly capable of emulating PS2 in full software, 360 can emulate Xbox and the difference in powerss is less. Sony's just not willing to put money into such an endeavour.

The Xbox hardware is pretty straightforward. The PS2 hardware is quirky as hell.

Sony has a lot to lose on not having PS2 BC. The PS2 sold better than the GameCube and Xbox combined. Backwards compatibility is a big sales argument for casual gamers not wanting to keep a second console for their old games. Also, having PS2 backwards compatibility would allow Sony to sell PS2 games on their online service, just like they're doing with PS1 games now and MS is doing with Xbox games.

Besides, the emulation of original xbox games on the 360 is far from perfect. Around half the library is officially supported, but of those many have bugs caused by emulation.

For specific PS2 games sold on the store, they could probably have specific emulation software tacked on to each game. In that case hiring people to code the limited emulation software would be worth it, I imagine.

You can use Swap Magic on both fat and slim PS2, but on fat PS2 it involves forcibly opening the DVD tray (not recommended)
