It doesn't matter so much these days which console you own, but back in the day it pretty much decided which side of the playground you were allowed to walk on. I was never a SEGA kid, but now I wish I'd been a little more aware of the few good games out there, because I don't know which SEGA games on the Virtual Console are good and which aren't.
I know of the website www.vc-reviews.com, which has reviews and gameplay videos, but I find the reviews less than useful because I don't know "Damo" and "Drake". The videos are good, though.
Also, I'd like to know about how well the games work with various controllers. I've played Super Mario World with a GC controller and it was horrible because the Y,B,X,A buttons are mapped differently on a SNES pad than they are on a GC controller (http://www.gamesfirst.com/previews/gamecube/Controller_large.gif ) If you've played any Genesis/Megadrivelol games on the VC with the Wiimote (alone) or GC controller I'd like to know if the button configuration is awkward.
I'm particularly interested in Contra: Hard Cops (if it's available), Dynamite Headdy and Gunstar Heroes. Anyone played those?
I think a few sega games are playable with just the wiimote (for example the Sonic games)
I think the GC controller layout would actually work better with megadrive games than the Classic Controller layout. The megadrive controller has three "action buttons", A, B and C, in a horizontal row like the B, A and X buttons on the GC controller.
- Ok, you must admit that was the most creative cussing this site have ever seen -
Mega Turrican is Turrican 3. TBH everything past Turrican 2 on the Amiga was gobshite, they become very linear, very cinematic. It's like back in the day you had Contra for action and Turrican for exploration, but Factor 5 got bored and tried to make it more Contra like.
I don't rate them good. But Mega Turrican has got a really good soundtrack at least. Super Turrican is poor and ST2 is even poorer still.
But I'm very anal about the series normal folk would probably like them!
I'd say Paper Mario is a good one to get - a good solid RPG. It almost looks on par with Super Paper Mario (Which is also a good game althought not quite as good as 1 & 2)
You will need a Gamecuben pad or an El Classico pad to play it though.

Or a good old fashioned N64 and N64 controller

You want Sega game recommendations? Well, there are a number of good ones that have already been VC'd...
...like Gunstar Heroes, to start. The definitive Treasure run-n-gun game with hectic, random, two-player action with an awesome weapon system and huge characteristic bosses. A must-have, in my opinion.
Also in the Treasure vein, there's Alien Soldier, which has a similar feel to Gunstar Heroes (though a bit more difficult to really get into), and which is essentially one big ol' boss rush. I'd say you can take a look at this one if you're really into Treasure's style.
And Dynamite Headdy (also by Treasure (it's hard to go wrong with these guys)) is some very random, terrific platforming fun. The stages vary so much while staying to the basic mechanics that it never ends up feeling repetitive ('cept maybe with the tower, but still...). It also has really great music, particularly for a Genesis game. You won't be disappointed here.
...moving beyond Treasure, there's Landstalker, an isometric adventure/RPG game with a lot of great puzzles and dialog (especially for the time). The dungeons can get pretty vicious, but it's a really fun game. And it's also got the usual high quality of music characteristic to Climax games. I highly recommend it.
Climax also did the Shining series of games, and while I wholly enjoyed Shining Force 2 (a turn-based strategy game), it's not on the VC yet. Shining Force 1 is there, but I haven't played it, so I can't say.
There's also Shinobi III, which is a really solid stage-based platformer (with lots of ninjas). It can get pretty tough, but it is exceptionally well-made.
Of course, there's also Toejam & Earl, the funkiest Roguelike (debatable) you'll find. It's got randomly generated levels, two player action, and some fairly bizarre concepts (it was spawned from a pizza-induced dream, I hear). The second game, while a solid game in its own right, is dramatically different.
Hey Fifth, thanks for those recommendations. Gunstar Heroes will be my next VC game. Have you played it on the Wii? I'm also wondering about where the Sega A,B,C buttons are mapped to on the Wiimote. 1,2,A or 1,2,B; or both? I have a Gamecube controller too, but I'm just wondering. I bought Super Turrican (SNES) tonight and playing it on a GameCube controller is really awkward.

That's funny, because for me, the Turrican series started with Super Turrican (I can hear a thousand Turrican fans screaming right now.) I never knew those games were originally about exploration. Well, they really did change the formula then, because Super Turry is a very linear, textbook shooter. That's what I like!

THIS IS A SEGA THREAD. NO SMELLY MARIO GAMES PLZ!!
I also discovered tonight that you can rearrange the Wii channels by grabbing them with A+B. Finally, the useless Weather Channel can get off the front page!
I've not played Gunstar Heroes on the Wii, but it should fare well enough. You've only got two primary buttons (jump and attack (and weapon select, but you'll never end up pushing that button)), and can change your controls in-game.
Just make sure you have a second player ready. It's not the same on your own.
I played some Gunstar Heroes game on the GBA, I think. How does that fare against the classics? Wasn't too happy with the GBA one... Probably would be better on the big screen.
The GBA Gunstar Heroes was decent... it had its good points (like the wide array of physical attacks you could do, and the visceral grandeur of some of the levels), but it lost a lot of what the Genesis version had. There was no 2-player action, the weapon system was grossly simplified, and all of the stages and bosses felt way too short, as though you're meant to blast through the game in ten minutes. You'd often be able to kill a boss before it got to do one or two attacks.
I'll hold that the original is a much better experience on the whole.
Me and my friend completed Gunstar Heroes on the Wii and it was fine with just the normal remote controller. Scratch that, it was frickin' amazing. Definitely get.
Thanks guys. Yeah, I wasn't overly impressed with the GBA Gunstar Heroes. It seemed to try (too) hard in some areas and not enough in others.
Anyway, I got Gunstar Heroes on VC and it's excellent. As far as I can tell so far, the Genesis "C" button isn't used. It was used quite a bit in Contra: Hard Cops by enabling you to stop running while shooting up/down at a diagonal angle. The Wiimote's B button would be great for this actually. I'll think about getting Dynamite Headdy next.
