Well since theres no news post for it I'm hammering down this talking post.

I'm part of a big forum that has a paid members section. It works really well too, maybe a bit clique-y at times (referring to the regular forums as out there™) but it has a really friendly atmosphere. It's $17 a year or something (a friend paid for mine ) and it also removes adverts, you can view secret bits of news that doesn't get posted yet. They even set up little games to play amongst the regular users, like themed avatars or sigs... But some already do that
Maybe some games could have some TDC members DLC or early beta/demos?

I'd pay for it.

I think it should all be free, I can't think of a reason why we need to pay for any particular service, does TDC need the money!?

The money would more than likely go towards hosting fees or whatever the donated monies go to. if the incentives are correct and worthwhile then i can hardly see a problem with a paid section. my one concern is it would have to be policed better than the main site. I.e stop all the name calling and back stabbing.

Well by paying to also view a private forum you generally act within the rules so your paid account doesn't get banned just some more examples, in the paid boards of my previously mentioned forum someone gave us all free tickets to an upcoming motorshow, another chap even gave away a free iPod to a good home. Also paid members get slightly larger dimensions for avatars

why does everyone want something for nothing?? NOTHING in life is free! If you don't pay for it now you will have to do so at some point in the future. How much must this site cost on an annual basis?? On average there are 3 Advert Banners per page which i'm sure goes a little way towards the hosting fees but sheesh!! If CT decided to start charging for updates would you all stop updating and just stick with an out of date product?? NO is the answer. Just because the kind people who run and host this site (for free!!) suddenly decide that it is about time for them to claim something back from us people are starting to whinge about it.

At the time of writing this (01:18 GMT 26/05) there have been 28 votes cast on this weeks poll. That breaks down to:

6 people would consider paying (me included)
14 want EVERYTHING for free
8 are unsure

what that means is there are 14 registered members of this site who are extremely selfish and inconsiderate. As i said if the incentives were correct and the fee matched what was being offered then i would have no problems with paying it! Admin's/whoever - if you decide to implement this then you may just have first fully paid member!

Rant Over!

Glad to see at least some positive replys.

This is what me and club were thinking about for paid memberships. Everything that is on the site right now would remain free.

1. Your own spot on the create-games.com server, you will get the abbility to upload your own games and pics to the site.

2. Special access to the premium-member forum

3. Different avatar demensions and your own sig

4. Possible a yearly klik-disc being send including a special episode of the klikcast on it.

5. No ads

6. Video reviews & more

My intention with this site is to make it grow i know very well that it is kind of stuck right now we need new members but containing the old members to. I have been trying to talk to clickteam to to help us solve this but these things take time.

Selling out? If we were to introduce such a system, it wouldn't affect how games are submitted or made, and it won't exactly limit your access to the site. At the end of the day the service provided to you is free and hosting and such has to be paid somehow. If anything, a new payment system such as this would just be like how people make donations to us now, just we give you something in return.

Several communities (communities outside of Klik, I mean) use methods such as these so that they can keep their service free to the majority of people. So I think your comment of us selling out is completely unfair. We haven't even gone ahead with the plans yet, they're still being discussed.

I don't think it's selling out. It costs a fair bit for hosing, especially good ones that manage to run big sites like TDC without (m)any hiccups.

Maybe paid members could get access to some extra themes too?

Am I the only one who finds private forums for paid members kind of pointless? TDC doesn't get much donations to start with, so we'd probably just have a handful of paid members anyway. And what would you say on a private forum?

"Oh hey lol I'm a paid member, OMG YOU'RE ONE TOO?"
"Hai guys, this post will only be read by a total of five people other than myself. Ever."
"Hey how do I make a custom platform movement? (Silence)... Anyone? (Tumbleweed)... Please?"

Makes for some great discussion.

Another benefit for paid members could be to have some sort of say in future updates on the sites, and to becmoe pat of the judging team for ompetitions if they wanted. Of course they wouldn't be able to enter the competition if they wanted to judge it but it wouldbe upto them to apply if they wanted to.

It could become a nice idea if it's done right.

something like allowing paying members more options in their profile, say... a bigger avatar and custom rating. Or being able to upload files to TDC server,

instead of closing off certain parts of the website for non paying members.

Basically, more for the ones that pay, not less for those that don't.

I don't think it'll be reducing anything for non-paying members. Think of it more like a renovation. We'll just be adding more features to the site, but that segment is only for paying members. But I too am of the belief that everything should be free (considering that my country's currency is worth 8 times less than the USA currency), so we'll see how it goes

That'd be fun.

Surely new features would help us get new members, as well as keep those who are thinking of leaving?
To be honest, I'm not even sure how we could get new members other than advertising on other websites and such, which is going to cost money. And if you didn't know already, we have no money (but hey, maybe a membership thing like we're discussing could help towards that).

What you need to do is to go through all old topics (yes, I know it'll take a while... but it'll be worth it in the end) and delete all the useless ones.

You could also create a forum specifically for the ones that are most helpful, but only let people view them, and not post in the topics.

It should save quite a bit of database space when you're through.

I am not sure if anyone does this, but how about using your games as advertisements? Just simply find multiple sites where you can put your game out to a different audience. Within your description of the game you can mention Click Team's site as to how you were able to make the game as well as The Daily Click. That way if someone really likes the game and becomes interested in making one too then they will know to come here.

I have some ideas.

Attracting new members
How about hosting games FOR FREE In exchange of placing a daily click logo in your game (on or before title screen) Then people downloading the game elsewhere would be directed to this site.

We could even have people put out gimped versions on other sites, and only have the full version on this site.

Money
How about a lottery? High profile members would donate prizes (signed artwork from a game? signed custom cd with soundtrack?) and people could buy tickets. The donators get publicity, TDC gets money and some lucky person wins... something related to a click game

As much as I support TDC, even I don't put a link to TDC on my games (though perhaps I should on my latest one..) I do love how a lot of those really serious games like ED and Knytt which give a mention to MMF though

Which takes up expensive bandwidth, especially for a good game. It's a good idea, but unfortunately bandwidth isn't free.

Also good in concept, but who would want anything put up by a kliker, unless it's a copy of MMF2 or a game design book or actual cash? I'd rather make it a game-making competition instead of a lottery though

In the interest of full disclosure, I voted yes, I would pay if things were worth it. I'm also over 30 years old nowadays.

I'd hazard a guess that most of the readers of this website (and most of those who voted "No, I won't pay") don't have jobs of their own, and have someone else providing for them. A random sample of users of TDC would indicate that there's quite a young age bracket active here. It's unrealistic to think you could convince someone who doesn't receive a steady paycheck (and that because they're either too young to work or already have a provider/legal guardian to buy them everything) understand the necessity of memberships, maintaining members, funding to pay for server fees, the costs of advertising, etc.

If you're running the website, it's ultimately your decision as to what you do with it. Those who really care about the website and/or understand the value of the paid incentives and what's done here will stick around, regardless. I'd say the benefits of paid memberships (some of which already mentioned are superb, by the way) would be worth a reasonable cost per year, and aren't unrealistic.

If you read the previous posts you would have picked up that additional content could be provided by extras in non-TDC admin games (I'd be willing to offer stuff, admins), early demos from paid members. From the admin side all they need to do is create a new board, increase avatar sizes for paid members, add a little trophy or something. It's hardly overhauling the whole site and there would be work incentive since they will be paid for it.

So we're paying for more user-content that will quickly die once we've lost interest, and then we're just paying to come to a minimum effort site again. This isn't Gamespot, we don't have anything to offer. The idea sounds good when you consider it at first, but most do.

So then they're just donating. Rather then having a donate button though, you have a monthly system automatically drain out money for donations, straight from their account because they mindlessly agreed to it.

I don't know how the admins here want to run it but where I got it costs £10 ($20) for a years membership. No monthly options, in the end it's just a glorified donation system with benefits that works.

Yeh I don't know were you got the automatic monthly billing idea from Brandon, but I'm quite sure it would not work like that.
It would either be a years payment for 1 year of membership, or a payment for permanent membership (depending on how we decide to do pricing .etc).
