Hello!

Some of you may remember me posting some sprites on here a while back. I have recently worked on my style and such to get a little better. Here's the end result from over at pixelation.

Image

I think it's pretty good right now. I'm still bothered by the hair. Not sure how much freedom I'll get with it.

I'll do some design change and see what you think of this new look.
Heck, I'm even thinking of doing a chibi style now.

Oh, thoughts, crits and comments welcome.

Greetings. I remember you were the person that asked if he could study my sprites. I also saw your post on pixelation, and noticed they weren't as helpful as they could of been. So I thought I'd try to help.
Image

I tried not to change the basic shape of your sprite as that's not the thing I want to try to teach you. The name of the game is colors. Unless you are limited to the amount of colors you can use for some reason, you have a lot more colors to play with. I make all my sprites with tgf's 256 color palette. Not saying you have to also, but no harm trying it out.

First things first, avoid using black for outlines. Unless it's for metal or the object you are coloring is dark grey, wouldn't use it. Use a darking color then your base color.

As for picking colors themselfs, pick 4 or 5 colors in the same color group. You could get away with less, but like I said before, unless you have some limits on the number of colors you can use, why limit yourself? Use the darkest color in the set as your outline color, use the others for the coloring. When you are done you can use the 2nd or 3rd darkest color to make your outline a little lighter in some places.

Hope this helps. Good luck. - tetsuya_shino

@Tetsuya-Shino: Hey there! After working on this for awhile and finally getting it this far, I thought my style looked familiar. Then I remembered that the older base was, I think, using some of your size restrictions on one of your sprites. I thought, oh crap, I'm gonna have to change everything. Then I looked again, and at your other sprites, and they don't match up I think. So I was a bit relieved. Then you posted. And another oh crap ensued. I was most pleased when it turned out to be a crit then a sprite ripper accusation. Anyway, enough drivel.

As for the colors. They say that less is good, so I tried to pick a palette that didn't give me too much yet just enough. The snes one covered that, and I'm trying to make it look like one of those games. But I guess no harm done if I'm trying to get it to look right. I should have done something with that outline. But I wanted to try out an npc and didn't think about it I guess. I like what you've done with the face there tho. That looks great.

@Others: Thanks for the comments. I hope what I mean by chibi actually will actually fit that style. I don't like posting unless I got something to show for it. Hopefully soon.

And without the help I got on Pixelation, I probably would never have gotten this far. Several people over there will definitely make it in the credits if I get this finished.

So you admit you've been editing my sprites? Normally I'd be super saiyin pissed... but I really don't see it. I don't know what you've been doing in the past, but your style now is quite different from mine. So now worries.

Glad I could help. I would I posted more, but I realized it was going from a 'how to pixel' reply to a 'how to pixel like me' reply. Anyways, the best way to get better, at anything, is to study how the pros do it, and keep practicing. I found a desent sprite rip site; http://www.spriters-resource.com/ Maybe you can study and learn from these? Good luck.

Some of you guys may remember these.

Image

First off, I apologize if I offended you. I really liked your art style and thought I could come up with something similar. I wasn't sure what to do so I looked at your sprite to see how I could do things. My mistake, you may kill my avatar if you want.

Looking online for tutorials on this sort of thing is like finding needles in a haystack. I'm glad though that this is an original style. If I may, I've taken the liberty of creating a sort of history pic to show how I came up with this. And also why I'm so concerned this might be looked at as a mega man series edit.

Image

(Whoop, almost forgot. Are you still in the navy? If so, thank you very much for serving.)

The reason it looks like a mega man edit a bit is because the way the legs are slanted, the shoes are HUGE, and the fact that the waist juts out a bit more than the back does; in other words, it looks like the character is leaning back. It's a good start, but it's the first thing to avoid if you don't want to look like that style.

I'm not sure if I'd say the shoes are 'HUGE', but I agree with the rest. A lot of people use mega man x as a base, but I'm not sure if would be the best one to use for learning.

Here is a test for you; see if you can try to draw your character in his boxers. *ahem* I know what it sounds like, but knowing what your character looks like without baggy clothes or bulky armour is a good drill. Also, see if you female version of your character.

If you truely want to improve, you're in for a lot of work. I spent about 5 hours drawing one character and I'm still not done with. It takes a real investment in time and energy. But if you're up to it, you can do it.

Playing around with leg poses. Trying to correct the leaning back problem. I think 3 does it pretty well. Except for the arm, which I'm going to fix.

As always, CnC appreciated.

Heh, the only real difference between 2 an 3, is maybe one pixel or two. But that just goes to show how exact pixel placement is key to how something looks. Speaking of looks, did a project logo. There's a few things I don't like about it, most notably the color and the firing arm look. But I can't think of another way to do it. And I'm not sure if it'll look right if I tweak things.

Cnc if you would like.
