Because if you're serious about making an online game, you want to run your own host.
If you're also serious about making an online game, you'll want get yourself out of the "Free" state of mind. No, you can't run a server off of a webhost like Freehostia or anything, but you can run your own server and open it to the internet, running your server. That's what I plan to do with ArcaneTale. We have a few PC's laying around that aren't being otherwise used.

i wouldnt use computers laying around. me and a friend build a fairly fast server (not like super fast but enough to do servery things) for like 350$. only neccessary parts. also you wanna look into getting a really fast connection for the server to be connected to the internet that doesnt go down for whatever reason. cable connection. fiberoptic.

For a simple klik MMO, I don't think a really fast system is necessary. I mean the system itself is able to run the game then I don't see the relevance of having a system much more powerful then that. The game isn't processing millions of lines of code a second, just to forward information sent from clients, to other clients.

thanks for the replies !
Sumo148: thanks for the tip, but the server was too slow for me. :,(
my problem is I have a computer I could use as a server but leaving it turned on 24/7 while i'm at work or school doesn't make me feel safe, not to mention the electricity bills and my own bandwidth (which isnt that much).

BrandonC is right about this.
You can't host a moo application on a webhost, because you need to run your click application. BrandonC is also right about the fact that you could use just about any old PC because hosting a click server program uses very little system resources.
However, one alternative to hosting the server in your own home is to pay for a dedicated server that will run your application. It's similar to webhosting but it costs a bit more money.
What do you want a dedicated server for? Do you want to host a MMORPG? If not, maybe we can give you some alternative suggestions?

It's not going to cost you much at all in terms of electricity bills.

If you have a computer on all the time then it'll burn out the components sooner. As with anything that's in constant use, it should die sooner than one that's just used normally, but we're still talking 3-5 years. Who knows? your CPU could go on for ever! I've never heard of a processor that's died from too much use, and I'm the most likely victim, considering how long I have my computer on for- and overclocked, as well.
