All right people. The community project is not doing so well. It started out just fine, but then I asked for people to write better stories and suddenly nothing happens anymore. So Neuro suggested that we get an engine, then with the ease of having an engine and level editor, more people will show interest in the game. So here I come asking for the greatest amount of assistance I've ever needed in a project. I didn't want to have to do this, but it looks like I'll have to start going out and recruiting people, as opposed to letting people discover the project on their own.
First of all, I need programmers for an engine. If you haven't been following the project, we are making a side-scrolling RPG-lite action game. I am requesting of those here that if you can or have made a custom platform engine that you come to the forums and show us. I'm talking to people like Pixelthief that can code like there's no tomorrow. I need you all to come and work together on a basic platform engine, then we shove in whatever features we need. The features that need implemented can be found here: http://www.create-games.com/project_forum.asp?view=post&id=1458&f=0&fid=3682
There are still more tasks to be done. While we need a platform engine, we also need a level editor. This way it will be easier for people to contribute to the actual gameplay. We need it as sophisticated as it can be, so that people making levels will be able to do a lot with it. This isn't a puzzle or arcade game, this is a game with a full-blown story and adventure, so remember that. There may or may not be a way for people to put in levels after the game is released (as in a special mode that allows sharing of levels) but that isn't of priority. Again, I cite the programming thread: http://www.create-games.com/project_forum.asp?view=post&id=1458&f=0&fid=3682
Story development is also necessary. We have some preliminary stories in the work right now, so it might be easier to expand on those, but you can still make your own. We also need people to draw concept art for the game, that way we have an idea of how it will look, how the worlds will connect, etc. Once the story gets developed enough to know what the worlds will be, then graphics people will be able to draw the actual level tiles and backgrounds, as well as enemies. At that point I will also be able to look for music and sound effects people. The story thread is found here: http://www.create-games.com/project_forum.asp?view=post&id=1458&f=0&fid=3723 The graphics thread is here: http://www.create-games.com/project_forum.asp?view=post&id=1458&f=0&fid=3952
For those of you that haven't shown interest, I have a general question. Why? What is it about the project that turns you off, or fails to catch your interest? Tell me, and I'll see if there isn't anything I can do about it.
You know, your biggest problem: Lengthy posts. I have absolutely no interest in this project because I haven't bothered to read your long posts about it. I didn't even read the one above this post.
And I don't normally have trouble reading long things. I often write long things meself! I don't know what it is that makes me not want to read it... :\ I guess that could be previous experience with mass group projects, I dunno.
I was interested in it before, but then I realized I need to be working on my own game more. Maybe that's the problem you're having?
I'm in touch with a few artists that would offer to help me with artwork for my game, but only after they can play a working demo. So it just goes to show you that if you have something tangible people can interact with, people would be more willing to help. I don't know what your skill is Mr. Lambert (drawing, programming, music, etc.), but you should be willing to push the project forward yourself if need be. Good luck. I'll be lurking- er, watching.
Well, I told you so (in your projects page) that this project was too complicated to come alive. It has been tried various times before and mostly abandoned after little improvement. You'll probably reply with a flame post to my reply but it won't change reality...
If everything works out and we get to see the end, then I'll take back everything I said
