okay, ive look all over the internet and no one seems to know how to change the mouse options for photoshop (unless it has to do with zooming or "mickey mouse")

my problem is for whatever reason today my mouse wheel (which i used to be able to use to scroll up and down) started scrolling left and right. this only happens in photoshop and is extremly annoying, and even more obnoxious is that no one knows anythign about it, and none of the help files with photoshop say anything at all about it.

help?

Try holding alt or control (or even shift) while using the scroll wheel... I know this switches the direction in other apps, just depends on which one the photoshop developers picked. Also make sure the num lock and caps lock and scroll lock are off. And that stickykeys is off.

Otherwise you could try clicking on the vertical scroll bar with the scroll wheel.

What version of Photoshop are you using? CS4 has some funky new scrolling techniques if you have a multitouch trackpad that somehow transfers to mouse movements too (at least on my OSX CS4, using a mouse wheel after zooming using the trackpad funks up the mouse).

As a last resort, reinstall Photoshop?

I've yet to have a positive experience with Photoshop CS4. Honestly, I've had absolutely nothing but problems with it. It's nice to see them implement hardware acceleration into the program, but the software acceleration was working perfectly for the program. I get perfect performance with Photoshop CS3 on my computer, and horrible performance on CS4 on my computer. I get far less performance than I should on my schools computers, both on the PCs and the Macs. The interface in CS4 is ugly and the hotkeys are screwy. Honestly, Adobe needs t get their act together, because $700 is a lot to ask for if you're not getting some kind of student benefit.

I still have Photoshop CS4 installed, but I reinstalled Photoshop CS3 and I'm absolutely dumbfounded by how much faster CS3 is, and I'm on Windows 7.

I like CS4 but it's a bit funny at times. I find it very hard to use with my Macbook Pro since they've enabled multitouch controls. Some bits are useful (pinch to zoom) but it's so precise that it also rotates the canvas if you slightly twist your hand. But since I found out how to import 3D models and paint directly onto them and then export as a texture... Can't go back! It also performs much better on very large files. Where the Tormi map would take up to 10 minutes to load in CS3, it's now about 3 minutes in CS4.
Just wished they would fix the multitouch controls .

Is this directly in Photoshop? I've been looking for a way to do this other than ZBrush's weird... self.

Yup, directly in it, but I think you need CS4 Extended edition. I didn't try it out but one of the students said its possible to load in video too. If I wasn't dealing with mega large files and 3D models I'd go back to CS3.

Perhaps I ought to find CS3, then. That model painting feature sounds great, but I could probably find 3 for a lower price and run it on a not-blistering-fast-but-acceptable rig.

I like CS4, although it's surprising that Photoshop doesn't have brushes like in Painter, but they have put realistic brushes into CS5 So it has bristles and stuff

There's an option under Edit-> Preferences-> General "Zoom with Scroll Wheel" you could try selecting and reselecting to see if it resets itself. I have problems sometimes with some things like that just not working all of a sudden and turning them on and off again usually works.

Unfortunately Chloecakes flew the coop of game making altogether. That's why we didn't mind going off-topic.
