The end of an era. 13 years after its original announcement, DNF sinks with its developer. Oh man! It was the ultimate venture capital driven game, and now it's never coming out. Like always, then, but still. We can't even pretend anymore.
That is awful news, not so much for Duke Nukem Forever as I wasn't expecting it to be released any time soon anyway, but 3D realms deserved a diferent fate.
This is mega weak. I've been waiting for this game since it was announced.
Ts;dr-
Was a mega fan of Duke 3D. Had the original and then bought some mega pack when I was still way under 18 years old. Even had my first paper round JUST to save up for it D: and i've 'gasmed over every screenshot and video released since.
RIP Duke. I've got low hopes for Trilogy just because every Duke game barring 1, 2 and 3D didn't cut it.
Lol, you guys are like the only one who seem to not expect this. It floated around the Net quickly. I mean it's ridiculous, these people were working full time on it, and they made no progress. 13 years is ridiculous. It took less time to make the Empire State Building. Heck, it took less time to make the atomic bomb. Toady One, a mathematics professor working part-time on his game managed to make Slaves to Armok and half of DF ever since Duke Nukem Forever was launched. Derek Yu started learning to click, formed and disbanded Blackeye Software, created Aquaria and ED, started TIGSource, got a degree.
DNF was half a generation ago. The action games genre was remade in all that time, including bullet time, the HL2 engine, TF2, all sorts of DirectX versions.

If it is real then I think it had a lot of potential (remember that the above is unfinished gameplay - which I guess is a surprise considering how long it has been in development). But yeah, pretty gutted about this news

I'm almost sure it isn't fake, the original author of the video, Brian Brewer, was one of the character animators at 3D realms. He used bits of the game to showcase his work as he is aparently looking for a job.

Oh no I think most of us expected it, but it's still sad and slightly shocking to just appear in one day. It wasn't like Free Radical or any of those other studios who slowly passed away (or got revived in the case of FR). It's like having a friend with muscular dystrophy or tubular sclerosis - you know it's going to happen one day but you hope for the best. And yes this game is like a childhood friend to me . I think the reason it took so long was that it was always going to be a really big game but they had to keep up with modern tech so they remade it more times than MSD2. But I don't blame them it looks like it would have been one hell of a game.
And that video. Damn. That looked ace I'm hoping to hell that Take 2 can still get this game out somehow.
Heh, after that Duke vid they showed a Pokemon Gold/Silver remake vid which was nice of them. At least there's something to look forward to!

These are the people who held a BBQ in a nearby carpark to E3 and only invited a few select people to join them and view their legendary game amongst strippers and such
Nothing they do could surprise me.
I saw the trailer thing. Awesome animations, but frankly, much of it looked faked. Esp since a lot of things looked unfinished. Heh, gameplay is almost the same as in DN 3D.

Really? The shooting bits looked similar (it is an FPS after all) but the climbing up on bosses, bosses doing more than just walking+shooting, the minecart, interacting with NPCs other than strippers and HL2 style storytelling were new for the series.
Climbing looked faked. Maybe we saw different video clips. Lol, the rest of the stuff seems pretty standard for a FPS.

From everything that I've seen and read about DNF in the last few days, I think that 3D Realms was just bullshitting around for the last 12 years. They're rumoured to have switched engines five or six times. Finished working on content and have a higher up say at the end, "no, I don't like it, do it over again" instead of when it's being started and worked on.
The best way I can relate this to clicking... Hrm... Imagine if every 6 weeks your computer wiped all the level and enemy graphics from your project, making you start over. Imagine if every 8 months or so saying that your computer wiped your engine from your project, making you find another one or start working on it from scratch.
3D support would be added to MMF before you finished your game. HWA would be finished and HWA2 would be in beta. Computers would have advanced to where 1.5TB HDDs are the norm for stock, store-bought machines.
Here's some stuff about just how long DNF took. Includes fun facts like what kinds of major events took less time to culminate than DNF. http://duke.a-13.net/

I have to be honest - i think it very well could be a stunt. What better way to sell a game than to make the whole world go "OH NOES! I NO CAN HAS DUKEZ!" and the release the game ?

Theres speculation it was bought via proxy or anonymously by a 3DR employee who knew what was happening and wanted to keep the project going.
Or that it is all just a big publicity stunt.
Personally I don't care so long as we get Duke Nukem Forever properly on track.
If it was, that explains why they took down savedukenukem.com's donation so fast, so that they won't make extra money of a game they're not even selling

Well another day another game studio has closed up - Factor 5 this time. http://kotaku.com/5253800/factor-5-officially-shuttered
So that's the developer of my fave Amiga game now gone as well as the developer of my fave old PC game (Duke). Great!
Seeing as it's DNF, there might be some NSFW pics in there, I didn't check all of them.
Edit: Lol, I was right, some are not safe for work.

I think all they should have done was finalize and release it as it is.
I mean we all know whatever has duke on is gonna rock anyway. And it's like you didn't know they (3D realms) shit golden eggs.
3D Realms shutting is sad, loved the Duke games in the 1990's and even the 3rd person shooters of the PS1. Not at all surprised about them going under though or the game being canned, and although i do hope this is a publicity stunt (and would be a magical fairy-tale ending if it was fake) i really doubt it somehow - life just isn't that good when it comes to games companies at the mo!
Love the video though, very nice. However, watching Duke and those idiot pig-aliens in high-res and full 3D is like watching The Simpsons as a live action film (think The Flintstones!) and somehow i feel it doesn't really fit the games i remember. I'm sure i wouldn't feel that way after playing a new 3D Duke but hey-ho, there ya go!
Heh, if they didn't release it, I bet it wasn't finished at all. I mean Fallout 2 and X-Com 2 were both rushed out and turned out well. The first Final Fantasy was rushed. Should've just patched it together and released it.

Yes but STALKER was also rushed and they tried to patch that.
If this game is released it will be the first Collectors Edition I buy because god ruddy rammit I want to know the full story behind this. It must be very well documented.
