Hi,
After spending a few years away from TGF, I've been bored recently and decided to revisit an old project of mine. One of my major goals for it is to have online item trading, by any means necessary short of "upgrading" to a newer product (I'm not comfortable using MMF, and I haven't tried TGF2 but I don't want to end up having to remove parts of the game that use extensions or resize/recode everything, I'm too far into development for that).
I could use a web server with a MySQL database, or a MOO server, or - preferably - let players connect to each other directly by having one player host and the other enter their IP. I'm not fussy about how it's achieved, I just can't get any of it to work at all!
So far I've tried MOO, which was completely useless junk that did nothing but crash; then I tried making a simple chat room with MOO2 using the tutorial at http://www.create-games.com/article.asp?id=529 (connecting to moo.create-games.com on port 1203). With MOO2 I checked for a connection by setting a counter to 1 and playing a sound effect, which was fine and giving positive results, but I wasn't able to retrieve the server message OR the number of people connected, and I've no idea why. I also tested with another person connected using the program at the same time and (of course) it just didn't work. That server is still active, right?
It's starting to sound like I need to use MOOclick, but for me that just raises more questions. According to the official Clickteam website, MOOclick is supported by TGF. Of course, the download link is broken, but wasn't it something you had to pay for anyway? I did manage to find mooclick.cox elsewhere online and rename it to mooclick.gox, but I guess that didn't work because it doesn't show up in my extensions. Has anyone successfully used MOOclick with TGF?
Essentially, all I want to do is send and receive strings online using the application's INI file. I would even use the old Direct Play extension, but I can't get that to work properly either. Please help, the whole project is based around being able to trade things with other players and I'm at my wit's end trying to get it to work. The most frustrating part is that I KNOW it's possible to do this in TGF (see: Smileyhouse)!

I don't have experience with MOO in TGF, but if you need any particular extension I probably have it. If you're going to upgrade, I would encourage you to upgrade to MMF2 if you can--skip over TGF2. They're exactly the same except MMF2 supports extensions and the icons are much smaller and easier to use. (Plus MMF2 doesn't put a popup on your games) I'm one of those staunch TGF1 defenders and users, but I'm glad I bought MMF2. It's a lot more powerful. (I still use both.)

moo.create-games.com doesnt work anymore. the moo2 api is outdated and unsupported.
head over to clickteam.com forums and check out oinc. its still in alpha/beta but awesome stuff can already be done with it and theres already great tutorials and video tutorials on how to use it.

try connecting to local host first, and host the server on your own machine. Then once you can get the game sending data through your own system then move on to public servers.
But you should really get mmf2 if you want to make an online game. It's too much work to setup a game like that just to have it so outdated later that it doesn't work at all.
