I know this question has probably asked a million times but where is a good place to find sound effects? Specifically for a platformer. Any help is appreciated.
i make my own or google "explosion wav download" or whatever.... but mainly yeah, i make my own. there are a few big sites people use but i dont know any of them!
it varies ... but yeah if you need audio software look no further than audacity. honestly i made most of my sounds for my current project with a microphone and audacity!
Google, and you can get 5 free from soundsnap. Used to be all free but unfortunately they decided to be gumfarts and make you pay. Audacity is good for editing things, but for recording you can use windows' plain old included recorder. I also prefer NCH's Wavepad to Audacity, for interface reasons.
SFXR is a nifty little program. It's useful for generating really retro sounds using sine, square or sawtooth waves, or a noise channel if that's the feel you want from your sound effects. I personally like it but I've heard others criticise it. Can't remember why now...
sfxr is good for making the initial wave. you can use other software to add wavs together, mutate them, etc. but otherwise its just 8 and 16 bit retro sounds.
Lately I've been using Sounddogs.com, they have a rathe large selection of sounds, some of which are free. The good thing is, the ones that cost money offer a portion of the sound effect that you can download for free. For example, I just needed a quick footstep noise, so I searched footsteps and found a clip of someone walking, then I saved the free sample which had about 5 steps in it and chose the best one through audacity.
