Hi guys, I have dug out my old copy of GF1 and am hoping to restart development.
This copy is a real antique, the date on it is 1996!! Tho i got it in 98. Anyway, I was very happy with the program back then (bar only 2 button support), still have the book that has the tutorials that came with it and I dont have the money for TGF2 atm so..
I was wondering, would I run into any problems if I start using this old version again? Would there be any conflic issueswith modern soft-hard ware, any licence issues? Are there patches for TGF1? Im planning on getting TGF2 when I have the money, relearning the progam with my old copy be a problem when I upgrage, has the interface and functionality changed radicaly? Would the information and tutorials here work with my old copy?
Any input on the above questions or any other issues people can think of would be greatly appreciated.
Eager to start my first game. Thanks!
The released game might be more buggy and crash more than an MMF2 game, there are lots of stability and performance benefits from going with a newer version. But it shouldn't be too bad. If you use all the internal extensions then you could always port the game to MMF2.
Thanks for the quick reply. I understand I need to upgrade, so its more a matter of using this old version to learn the program. You comment about porting tells me that the two are very similar, so sounds like im fine to move ahead
I'd been using TGF1 from before 2000 and from constant use the only problems i faced when uing it on XP and recently Vista was just random crashing. The step through editor didn't work at all at some points, and certain commands didn't work completly but other than that its a good medium to learn from before upgrading to MMF2
Good luck and hope to see your first game here soon.
I'm so far beyond the point of no return I've forgotten what it looked like when I first passed it...
MMF2's interface is very similar to TGF1. The biggest difference is the animation editor, which is funny, since it's closer to TGF1's animation editor than MMF1.5's. The event editor is practically the same, except it has a few more features. TGF usually crashed only when I made a logic error in my programming, but there are a few quirks that will take it down. You learn to avoid them. (Like that one weird bug where it crashed if the last node in a path movement is directly over the first node. O_o)
The tutorials here should indeed work with TGF, as long as they don't require an extension or MMF2-exclusive feature.
Make the jump to MMF2 when you can, but you'll do fine to refresh your memory with TGF. I still draw my graphics in TGF1 from time to time.
Thanks alot guys, thats everything I needed to know
I've upgraded to 1.6 too. Thanks alot again.
Oh one more thing guys, I remember the only thing that bothered me in GF1 was support for 2 buttons only. Is there any way around this, and also, how many buttons does GF2 MMF2 now support?
MMF2 supports 4 buttons, but with a extension you can pretty much do anything (analogue, rumble, triggers). Can TGF1 use extensions? That might be a way to get more buttons, I know there was an extension for MMF1.5 that let you use multiple buttons.
Probably not the best solution but you can just use the keyboard for more buttons. It's only on a rare occasion people wont have a keyboard in front of them. Even some Amiga and Commodore 64 computer games used keyboards for extra buttons.
i'm pretty sure TGF extensions are a different format to MMF ones.. isnt it .gox and .cox or something? ... it's been a while since ive needed any extensions to be honest.

TGF and MMF 1.5 games are also a tad messier to distribute. Well, not messier, but outside of the click community, you need to make sure you always include CNCS32.dll for TGF and CNCS232.dll for MMF 1.5. This isn't required for MMF2 though.
Thanks alot for your help guys, I may have to return to the extensions help you have given me at a later point when Im a bit more experienced with the program.
There is one other issue that has come up. I downloaded the latest (1.6) patch to update my old CD version (1.4) and when I installed the patch I selected 'unregistered version', since I hadn't registered this version and it worked fine in the past without me doing so... Now when I start the program, I get a message saying that I cannot save standalone games and can only use the program for 30 days!! I tried clicking the register button in the menu window but it just takes me to the Click Website and I cant find anything about registering. Fursthermore, I can't find any kind of CD-Key either in the CD case, one the CD, or in the big tutorial book anyway..
Can anyone give me some advice on what I should do?
Does the CD version have a key? If not, I believe Jeff's address is just Jeff@Clickteam.com. You could also PM him on the Clickteam forum or try to catch him in Gwerdy chat.

They don't sell the license anymore. It was about the same price as TGF2.
I have the disk too! . Actually I have two, I have the old one and the new EXPLODER disk.
I still use TGF today because I still love it. It's never really buggy with me, but after being a user for so so so long you tend to know what bugs your version of TGF, so you work around it.
You can make engines in TGF just as good as MMF2, but the only thing I would say, is to ask someone to port the game made in TGF over to MMF because MMF2' exes are far better than the TGF ones.

Thanks alot to everyone for your help. I e-mailed Jeff and he directed me to the 32bit patch on this page: http://www.clickteam.co.uk/downloadcenter.php?i=114
I had to uninstall GF and re-install before doing this since it couldn't find the version I had updated with the other 1.6 patch. Anyway, its done the trick.
Thanks again everyone who contributed.
