Bloody hell, he was getting well emotional there. I was behind him though and you could tell (despite the fact it was a bit weiner-ish) he mean't every word he said in anger. Never seen this program before but looked good. And reminded me of Jeremy Kyle in terms of mannerisms and the things he said quite alot.
Speaking of which, despite the show being just that, "a show" relying on the worst of this country being classed as entertainment, i do like his straight talking to the layabouts and scumbags of this country. If only our government and the loony liberals employed to come up with the crazy rules and schemes we are forced to adhere to had as much spine.
I'd be surprised if he was being sincere. If he'd been genuinely angry he wouldn't have smirked proudly at every applause, which is where Edmonds' real ambition lies - public attention. His promoting himself (no pay for the show, his 'fight') in the middle of the cause was also pretty disingenuous behaviour and completely irrelevant to the soldier's plight. Followers of his radio work over the years may remember a number of causes he dropped and didn't see through as soon as the public and his listeners had moved on from them, the cause itself abandoned. 'Issues' are Noel's party piece.
If Edmonds wants to do anything other than posturing and, like you say, rely on the worst examples of public service in the UK for slimy entertainment, then he should bite the bullet and enroll into politics properly, rather than indulge in television theatrics and catchy soundbites and leech off solitary 'issues' that appeal to peoples' discontent with the way the UK is run, like the very tabloids he complains of do. And in terms of the Jeremy Kyle mannerisms, he does a similar tirade of self-righteousness.
Sure, there are worthy causes and villains out there - not necessarily the tabloids' easy hate figures like 'Fred The Shred', but there are - but Noel Edmonds feeding off someone else's misfortune to promote his altruism and feed his ego under the pretense of helping is something I can't abide. The soldier getting his case heard is a fortunate side-effect of an altogether cynical, calculated publicity stunt.
Edit: Just watched the Countdown gotcha again, man I miss Noel's House Party. There were some incredible pranks.

One of my favourite Gotcha's was the Trevor McDonald one, simply because he took it so badly and famously refused to appear on the aftershow. I can't seem to find a video anywhere online to show those who didn't catch it first time, though.

Yeah, you have a good point there. However I also think that it's too difficult to make the right changes in politics (in the UK atleast) because you have too many people already in politics who'll stick together and stop you doing what you'd want to do - they're all too corrupt!
And even if you do manage to get the whole of parliment on your side, you've then got to do it all again with the idiots in the EU parliment; the likes of that moron Welsh wind-bag Kinnock and the others who failed to succeed in thier own countries....
That's very true, the system is fundamentally corrupt, but it seems far more can be done from the inside with one's own constituents and county as an example* than a show that barely even pretends to be anything more than entertainment.
*e.g. that MP who had 35p's worth of expenses in the last year, thoroughly shaming his peers and proving that their claims were unnecessary.
