Hey guys--

I've tried using CamStudio to make game trailers, but it's very choppy and poopy. What do you guys use to make game trailers?

I think I've answered this six times now. O_O

BSR Screen recorder is nice. If you use HWA Fraps is handy too. One is free (With watermark), one is not.

Camtasia Studio 3. There was a time when it was downloadable for free (don't think it still is officially)

Thanks-- BSR works well, but that watermark is quite distracting...

You may have to just buy it. Sometimes free just doesn't cut it.

I also use CamStudio - it helps the frame-rate LOADS if you re-size your game window smaller whilst recording. Smaller window size = less data per frame = more frames per second

Ooorrr if you have 2 computers you can send one of the video outs to a video in. Thats how you'd get the bare minimum of dropped frames.
I do all my recording in Camtasia, editing in FCP.

CamStudio and all those other programs, they're nice and all, but if you either have Windows Vista or you're using HWA in your project, absolutely nothing will beat the performance and quality that comes with Fraps. Except of course a program as good as Fraps that's free, but it's defiantly worth every cent of the $37 I paid for it. I don't use it all the time, but every time I do use it, I don't regret my decision to actually buy something like that.

Does Vista automatically render MMF2 games with DirectX or something?

If you have Aero turned on, the entire desktop is run with DirectX on Windows Vista. Incidentally, this gives Fraps the ability to record the entire desktop like it would any normal DirectX game. So yes, Windows Vista displays your game in a DirectX environment which Fraps can record.
It's going to record the whole desktop though, not just your game. If you want to record just the game, make it fullscreen and then record it with Fraps. Or better yet, if you have decent video editing software, just crop the video.
