I got it back when and I was 5-6 and it's still one the most addictive and nostalgic games in my library. If you don't remember, let me describe.
Mini car racing is an Isometric racer with very detailed tracks and 8 different car models to choose from. You can upgrade your car's speed, handling, and armor. (Yes, armor- this game is competitive.) up to 5 times each. There are also 9 weapons to add to your car, which can be used up to 1-5 times per lap.
-Laser (fires green, double shot laser)
-Turbo blaster (fires like a minigun)
-Missile
-Plasma (shoots small blue orb that bounces off walls)
-Disruptor (fires purple, double shot laser that travels through cars)
-Swarmer (shoots mini missiles in 6 directions)
-EMP missile (screws up circuitry on opponent car upon impact)
-Homing missile
-Quantum torpedo (basically the bigger brother of the plasma, just red)
There are also traps to lay behind for opponents.
-Oil
-Glue
-Mine
-EMP Mine
-Clustermine (Shoots 6 explosive mini pellets in 6 directions)
In additon to weapons, ther are apecial items which can be added to the car,
-Rambuster (deals damage to opponents car upon collision)
-Neutralizer (absorbs first damage from weapons per lap)
-Jump jets (makes your car jump in the air)
-Nitro (gives you an extra boost)
I don't exactly know how many people played this, but despite it's old age and outdated graphics... and no music... it's a true gem that everybody should've known about.
I doubt many people played it (or have even heard of it).
It's just bland - there were already a million other games like that by 2000 - eg. "Death rally", "Rock n Roll Racing" etc...
"Ignition" was a really good arcade racer - you should give that a go.
And "Carmageddon" of course - An absolute classic, but I guess you missed out on that one if you were only 6 years old in 2000. So young...
Still, I guarantee you - without "Carmageddon" there'd have been no "Grand Theft Auto"
I definitely did miss out on alot of games back when I was 6 cause the only thing I really cared about was drawing. Racing games are fun, but I've always preferred the fighter, adventure, or action types. Come to think of it, I still miss out on alot of games nowadays.
Nonetheless, I might get some old games for the comp or the PS2 whenever I get time for it. Thanks for the suggestions.
I hear ya. Somehow I remember what I went as for Halloween back then, but it feels somewhat recent. *cracks back*
Yeah, 2000 isn't really old at all. It's just that the game feels so age old due to it's nostalgic value. Looking back you realise Halo is going on 10 by 2011. Blessed be, my life is flashing before my eyes...
Dunno if you fancy racing too much, but it's a great deal for the price it's selling at and its level of Addictivity (Real word?). Gamespot members gave it 8.8 stars based on 30 votes. I'd say give it a go, it's rather fun.
W3r3w00f: Never heard of this game before, so i ckecked it out... i have to say it looks promising! I'm a big fan of these kinds of games (used to love MicroMachines V3 on the PS1 and the even older Super Skidmarks on the Mega Drive) and so i looked a little deeper into this game. Graphics look good, gameplay has been rated very highly (see link http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/home/930888.html, though i think the reviews/scores may be a little biased) and it's cheap - i just bought a new copy off eBay (still sealed) for £1.20 and free P&P, so i'll let you know what i think of it when i receive it
Adam: I think you could be wrong to make that assumption about this game based on it's packaging and screenshots and you're missing out on all kinds of games with that outlook.
Awesome, can't say you'll be disappointed with this game then!
Yeah, I think Adam was judging it by the box art. It is quite a set off, but the game is way better. Even after 9 years it's still one of my favorites.
Where on earth did I mention the box art? I googled for screenshots. Like I said, it looks boring. Back in 2000 I was playing Crash Team Racing on the Playstation. That was a fun racing game.
It's pretty hard to tell how fun a game is going to be by looking at screenshots.
Btw werewoof, just for comparison when I was 5 it was 1989. Thats why I don't consider a game made in 2000 old. Back then my dad had probably just bought our Amstrad cpc and I might have been playing Board game conversions like Cluedo and Trivial pursuit or Roland on the ropes.
Hmm around that time I would be playing MarioKart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Driver (PS1 & PC), Micromachines V2 Turbo (SNES) and Micromachines V3 (PC), GTA and GTA2
I miss the days when driver was good , I loved driver 1
Back in 2000?? Seems like yesterday , time speeds up as you get older
I've never actually been in there but they take up one floor of a large building. My guess is that they commission other game developers to make games for the company and then either pay royalties per sale or buy the game off them completely for a large price, and then owning all rights to that game.
Okay, so now i've had a good chance to play Mini Car Racing and i have to say it is a fantastic game! It takes me back to the 16-bit days of playing isometric racers, such as Rock 'n' Roll Racing and that other one on the Mega Drive with the cows in it (i forget its name) and it really is a shockingly good game for the money spent. I paid £1.20 for a new sealed copy on eBay, with free P&P (which apparently cost 75p anyways, according to the postage sticker!) and with 50 tracks it is worth every penny!
Granted, the weapons, the special upgrades and the vehicles themselves are pretty generic, the gameplay itself is as solid as you could possibly hope for and the sheer variety in how the cars handle, as well as the well-made upgrade system, makes for a remarkable experience. Seriously, i cannot say enough for how good this game is for such a bargain price!
