Hello people !
I have been inactive with the game producing for a long time and thought it was time to come back !
On the way i encountered a problem that i also had with my last rts gams:
The midi music !

It seems to lag everytime it changes midi track or in the start of a level.
Do you have any idéas?

No sir, it does that to me too and always has. That lag I hear is the time it takes to load the midi's information so it can play it. Unfortunately it also has a lag between loops as well and almost always cuts off the first note of the song from the 2nd loop onward.

If there's a way to somehow preload these things that might help with your intial lag problems.

That's a timeless lovely bug. Takes me back to my roots, back to the knp days.

Yep that midi delay bug has been around since the beginning.

I think the only worthwhile solution is to have your music in a different format (even converting a midi file to MP3 even though that goes against the whole idea of Midi) and using a plugin to play it.

It might not be a bad idea to use something like iTunes to convert it to MP3 (Makes it sound better usually) and then use audacity to make it an OGG so you can keep it internal.

So there isn't an extension that can playback midi with precaching or a buffer or something?

Have you tried the MCI object? I remember it solving all the MIDI problems in TGF1 I think this can play your midis without lagging your game.

That's very very useful, Ricky - thanks! I know that hardly anyone uses MIDI music anymore but I like to use it for my competition games.

Are there any disadvantages to using Direct Show? I've never used it.

I don't know how to make direct show play over frame, or if it even can.

Does directshow make the midi internal? I'm probably alone in this, but I hate having external files thrown willy nilly everywhere.

You could make them internal yourself if you wanted. Just attach it to the exe and decompress at runtime.

No more external files needed! Just the exe!
