Gonna start working on a small(currently) action-rpg platformer with someone soon.

I am a bit dry when it comes to ideas, and he is going to be focused on doing art for the game so we are looking for someone that may be interested in writing a story or providing an already written story for the game.

If you have an idea, feel free to post it or pm it to me, as we will review any ideas submitted and decide which we prefer.

It doesn't have to be extremely elaborate as of yet - it can be a WIP or a top of your head idea - even just a paragraph or two.

So, your friend is doing the art? My advice is to ask your friend what he is good at drawing, then try to make up ideas based around that. There is no use asking for new story ideas if your friend can't draw the art to back it up. (assuming you are not using ripped art).

Can I ask what sort of society this is? Agrarian? Industrialized? Post-industrial? What year is it? What kind of technology do we have access to? Or can we determine that for ourselves?

Everything can be self determined. We have already discussed coming up with ideas ourselves, but anything is an option.

Right now all we have decided is that fantasy (you know, typical dragons etc.) is the theme we are going for. I know that is extremely broad, but I will update as we go.

Maybe you don't understand what I'm saying. If I said,"you should make a game with dragons", but your artist can't draw them, then you can't make that game. Unless, you are going to use stolen art.

Ask your artist what he can already draw, then make a game based around that.

Basically just for for what seems fun to do. Are you going to enjoy adding magic abilities? Guns? Huge bosses, NPCs? Just write a list of everything you want in your game and make a simple story that enables you to add them. After all, and this is especially true for older-style games, the story is only a vehicle and an excuse to put the stuff you want in your game. If you need someone to write dialogue or whatever after that, then im sure loads of people could do that!

Key ingredients for any generic RPG storyline:

One young man/boy - of great potential power, but naive with it. Doesn't say much.
One master/sage character - teaches the young man/boy, of great power himself but must leave/die around halfway through.
One love interest - obligatory, has known man/boy since childhood, preferrably of lesser power than the man/boy, but able to offer backup in fights. Young man/boy must not shag love interest before final fight (premature climax).
One bad boss guy - the main enemy, massive strength and power, commands entire armies etc. Think the evil eye guy off Lord of the Rings. The final fight.
Some lesser bad guys - basically act as sub-bosses. Often are very powerful, and command their own armies, but must be beaten before the bad boss guy.
One setting - pirates, medieval times, the future, the 1800s, dragons, basically the graphical feel of your game. Must be under threat from bad boss guy, hence starting the young man/boy's quest.

Optionals:
Crazy dude - side character who doesn't seem to have any morals and acts as the comic relief.
Love interest 2 - must be of a different nature to love interest 1, ie one feisty, one quiet; or one easy-going, one uptight. Must have different coloured hair to 1. Interest of love number 2 never overcomes that of 1.
Shady dude - a side character who constantly switches sides from bad to good.

So there you go. Just give the characters names and gfx and bob's your uncle.

I was actually going over a similar method in my head. We may end up using this.

Thanks a bunch .
