One day while using my iPod touch I had this desire to use a microphone with it. However, I had purchased a 2nd Generation iPod touch, so the included headphones did not have a microphone. So I went to eBay and bought a pair with a microphone for US $.99 (+ US $1.98 for shipping, because they come from China.) Now I have my headphones and can use the Skype app. Yay.
What I want to know is if I can use the headphones as a headset on my computer. If I plug them into the headphone jack on my computer they register as headphones but not as a microphone, and if I plug them into the microphone jack they register as a microphone and not headphones, but the microphone picks up no sound whatsoever.
I don't think there's a way to configure your computer to get it to work as it is now. Those 3 grooves on the jack are for the microphone(1) and headphones(left and right channels), so the problem is that they're all going down the same cable. You'll need to look for a splitter (if such a thing exists) that will allow you to plug into both the headphone and microphone socket on your PC. I guess iPods have channels for those 3 inputs in the same input socket. Skype on the iPod Touch is nice and handy, I use it a lot myself.
