Is there any reason why some file types might be disallowed on my own web hosting space? I was trying to upload a mod file (.xm). It uploads with no problem, but when I try to access it, it gives a 404 message. If I rename the extension to .zip it downloads ok. I'll feel like an idiot if I've just missed something silly, but I'm pretty sure I haven't.

My host does the same. Are you using GoDaddy, perchance? I think they make you pay for some extensions.

For instance, I have to zip an mfa to share it.

I'm using Fasthosts, and I've not had this problem before. They must have changed something I guess.

Update: Fasthosts say that it's something to do with MIME types not being set up on the server. (To anyone who knows: is this true - would the omission of a MIME type cause a 404 error?) They then asked me to send a list of all the filename extensions I'll ever need to use and they'll add them. Obviously I don't have time for that, but I might make a little program that generates every possible combination of 3-letter words after a period and send them the output.

So. Do most web hosts pull this trick now, or is it just GoDaddy and Fasthosts?

Hmm, apparently this is the case. IIS 6.0 throws a 404 error if a file is not associated with a MIME type.
