This is a piece of reference art I made for a novel I'm currently working on called The Painters.

Constructive feedback welcome. These serve three points really...
* Good for me to look back on so I can keep consistency throughout my novel.
* By showing these off, hopefully I can build up anticipation and interest for the novel by folks around me.
* Quite frankly, I just want to get better. I'm always trying to get better at digital artwork.

Shouldn't that be "Mage's Potion"? As a piece of art it's excellent though. Well done!

Would it? Mages Potion is the name of the potion, it's not referring to it as a particular mage's potion, or form of ownership.

Anyway, thanks. More feedback?

I like the shiny glass effect and the way the potion distorts the pattern beneath.

The first thing I saw when I looked at the image was . . . a penis.

No joke.

This picture scares me.

LOL

Reminds me of the simple 3D images used as power ups on pokemon cards and an excuse to use the whole swirly smoke thing again.

OK, my mistake, then.

I really couldn't think of much more feedback for you. It's a really well created image.

Love it, love it, LOVE IT. A+ shading, A+ lighting (could be SLIGHTLY more intense, not by much though), A+ effort.

The lighting is probably the only critisism I have.

"Reminds me of the simple 3D images used as power ups on pokemon cards and an excuse to use the whole swirly smoke thing again."

Sweet, I might start collecting those cards.

The Painters is a story about a writer, Aiden Frame, who discovers an old technique using 'mages potion' to paint magnificent worlds and become a part of them. After discovering one of his worlds contained life however, a twisted army general by the name of Arlan, tries to enslave the people of this new world. When attempts fail the painting is burned and accusations are made out that the second world - Allendoane, were violent mindless killers.

After everything seemed to be over, rifts start opening up across the land and throughout Eidenshire, and attacks are made from Allendoane. It's at this point when you discover that the paintings weren't creating worlds but rather linking to pre-existing universes. From there, the story takes on a whole new life as you meet a whole new wealth of characters with all new backgrounds, explore all new locations, and take on all new problems and levels of depth to what originally seemed like a very linear story.

The mages potion is a particularly special item of the novel. It's the result of atheistic non-believers who were born without possession of magic, capturing and experimenting on mages and learning how to use their blood to forge these special potions. After all the mages were presumed dead, mages potion could no longer be made and the art of magic was presumed dead. Painting was an art invented using the mages potion by the non-believers after they started losing the war and it ultimately lead to their victory.

PS: Thanks again for the feedback. I was playing around with the lighting a bit. It was originally a lot more extreme however I wanted to make the potion liquid really stand out because the aesthetic qualities of the potion are an important visual representation.

The main ingredient of mages potion is the blood of a mage. Instead of swallowing it like a normal herbal potion, it's injected directly into the bloodstream. Too much of it without a necessary build up resistance to it's power would result in an extremely painful death. Mages are born with this natural resistance.

I love it. It has a very indie look

Sounds cool. Any moral dilemnas between combining stuff from different paintings? No wait, don't tell me, that's a spoiler.

Can there be a moral dilemma whenever everything that can exist, does exist in one of an infinite number of universes and these paintings merely connect you to which ever one matches whatever you painted?

Yes, but in a different way. It would be bad to give a primitive tribe living on roots nuclear weapons or something like that.
