ok so when i have my character obtain some power up i want his colour to change like in mario bros once mario has the fire flower his cloths turn white and red so thats the kinda thing im trying to get. any ideas on wats the quickest way 2 do this ... cheers

Animation > Replace color
That's the easiest and closest way you'll get to how they did it in the classic NES/Genesis days. It changes any single color throughout the whole object, to another color. Do this once for each shade of that color too.
Btw, if you plan on using ink effects, don't. Get MMF2 HWA (it's free) in Clickteam's forums. Use pixel shaders instead.

I'd just draw a separate animation - it's probably going to be easier.

yeah go with Sketchy, just make 2 separate sprites, then if powerup = none > show sprite 1, if powerup = flower > show sprite 2 and so on
