This is funny, because I was actually watching a few videos on Scientology yesterday. You could say they are nuts for trying to establish themselves as a religion, but we've already got Mormons, who are equally as nuts and are considered an established religion. Oh and if you think those guys are nuts, you should check out some of those crazy Christians! Islam, Zeus, Krishna.

The best part of it is that every group thinks that all the other groupings are the crazy ones! (And I'm not singleing out religious groups, all you atheists, anti-theists and "agnostics are equally crazy for the same reasons)

Be the best person you can(I'm looking at YOU now, user formerly know as retarded tree), and try to realize we are all human, and therefore crazy until we do something about ourselves. All those "truly-nice-people-I-know" have actually -all their life- tried to be the best they could. So be inspired and take responsability for your being here. Even if that just amounts to behaving in an internet forum.
But it's the religion itself that's messed up. Obviously there are many people of many different groups that are genuinely good people, which goes to show you that you don't need to belong to a certain group to be a good person. And of course you're right, most of this world is bonkers.
But, I'm talking in specifics of the beliefs themselves.
Scientology claims that we are riddled with dead space aliens and if we rid our bodies of them we can perform telekinesis, of course you'll have to pay loads of money first to get there.
Mormons believe that God (L O' Heem) is a space commander, Jesus and Lucifer fought a galactic battle before time, the spirit children that did not fight in the battle became the Negro race, and that Joseph Smith got all this from magical gold tablets hidden by the last of the whites killed by the native American Jews long before America was discovered and that no one could see them but him.
Christians believe in an Angry volcano bigot god that murders babies and people that don't know how to set a fire correctly, then does a 180 during part two and decides to be loving all while still wanting his followers to kill anyone who doesn't agree with them. And at the same time, all of the characters and stories are plagiarized from most religions that came before it.
I couldn't tell you about most other religions, except Buddhism requires no deity and allows you to choose your own path in life and believe what you choose to believe, as long as you believe you are a good person. But of course they have their fair share of crazy stories too.
On top of that, most of these religious institutions will try to discredit everything that goes against their teachings. Most of them contain ridiculous explanations for how things in life work, and have been proven wrong scientifically for many years. Heck, many of them claim the world is flat and that the sky is covered in a glass jar. Evolution, which has led to a multitude of discoveries and is backed up by mounds of evidence is only taught to kids as an "alternative theory". Ironic that most religious people actually accept this theory (even the pope), but most of the outspoken people try to discredit it because it would mean that their texts aren't the true word of their lord. But the sad thing is the many decent religious folk that don't buy into this garbage sit by the wayside just because it's their team. Do you know how many people voted for Bush just because he was a Christian? Not that any of the other people they'd bring up would be any better. But it is completely ridiculous, and has only led good people into wasting time on nonsense, as well as justification for countless atrocities (should I bring up Hitler, again?), and it's something this world can really do without.

I could find plenty more for you, although these more pertain to Jesus not being as peaceful as he's made out to be. There is one verse which Jesus was speaking in parables, the one about the king giving a feast to the other royalty, and the ones who did not go, he killed. Obviously, the king represents God, and the feast represents heaven, and killing represents condemning them to hell. This is what God does, if you do not believe in him, he sends you to be tortured for an eternity. Hardly a loving tolerant deity.
In terms of Jesus getting rid of the old law is up in the air. There are many Christian sects that are divided amongst themselves, but of course, anyone who denies that the old testament condones things like slavery, child sacrifice, all kinds of crazy stuff.
