1. Use gradients, lots of them!
2. Don't draw your own graphics, rip them from SNES games instead.
3. In fact, don't make your own character either, just make a fan games. People love Mario.
4. MORE GRADIENTS!
5. Don't ever EVER make the bad guy of your game a liberal or else you'll be attacked by an irish crossdresser.
6. Gradients, use them.
7. When you upload your game, mail EVERY admin asking them to frontpage it. In fact, admins get a lot of mail so you better mail twice in case they miss the first one.
8. When all else fails, use gradients.

(this is a joke post, don't do anything of the above)

OMG you did?! Maybe we're identical twins not aware of it... hmm, the idea seemed more silly after I wrote it than before. May be due to my wine intake...

My general advice:

1. Start simple. Don't make your first game an "epic masterpiece." You'll never finish it.

2. Original graphics are always superior to ripped graphics. Draw your own stuff.

3. Seek criticism... early and often.

4. If you don't know how to do something... just ask. People will help.

5. Re-create a game you like... then throw it all away. You'll learn a lot by building an engine that mirrors an existing game engine. Just don't call the end product your own.

6. Less is often more. Don't make extra graphics or game mechanics if you can't refine or debug them. Small games which are free of bugs are better than large games with lots of bugs.

7. Don't do drugs. The whacky ideas that gamemakers have ... such as diminuitive, mustachioed Italians chasing gorillas with wooden mallets does not come from narcotics. It comes from pizza... the gamemakers food of choice.
