also gamespot sucks at editing videos. they should hire me. tried to watch it at work but when pixel is dubbed im like SAY WHAAAAT? and had to turn up the volume and then they showed americans in interviews again and it was super loud of course. couldn't understand any single word pixel said - awful video editing, gamespot.
but yeh cave story 3d omfg
also looked at screenshots of ridge racer which i love for the psp. i remember people were WOWed by the graphics the 3ds got and like ITS LIKE GAMECUBE - i don't know PSP ridged racer still looks 100 times better than those ugly 3d screenshots i saw of it - leave me alone with soulless "its about GAMEPLAY" comments

For a while I think people were talking about Kid Icarus being a launch title.
A long time ago (n64 days), Nintendo, alongside Treasure, developed Sin and Punishment on the N64. It is definitely the only Nintendo 64 game I have nothing but good things to say about. Kid Icarus, being a rail shooter, leads me to expect the same (or better) quality and fun factor that was exhibited by Sin and Punishment. I was going to buy a DS JUST to get this game on launch, given that I have $150 or so in Best Buy gift cards, but finding out that it was actually not a launch title made me second guess. The fact that the 3DS can't record video just made me want one even less - at least until the games come out.
I just hope it isn't bloated with crappy N64 games. I could care less about the OoT or Star Fox (unless it was the Snes one ) ports.
Haven't really used a game boy or bought a game for 7 years, but after trying to work on enemy designs for Asunder, I've found myself rehashing tons of old castlevania & metroid games on my GBA that was lying around, so I got to thinking about buying a 3DS and some of the games I've missed then, to spark some extra creativity and ideas as a learning idea. I can't really keep developing as a game designer while staying aloof from modern gaming, so I'm pushing myself to buy something and start playing games again.
I got my hands on with some Pilotwings at Best Buy; it's a neat little system. Unfortunately, that's all it is right now. The initial support (Outside of Super Street Fighter IV) is pretty lackluster. I loved Pilotwings (SNES, never did get the 64 version), but nowadays its hard to support an entire game on that premise. I think I will be cancelling my preorder, until the software library improves in a year or two.
Plus I also preordered just to cash in on ebay, and that doesn't look like it's going to happen.

The platforming genre hasn't progressed since the 90s, unless you believe collectathons to be amazing.

Gameplay wise? Nope! And thats why I'm working on something fresh!
Graphics wise? Heck yes! And thats why mine looks like poo!
I don't really like the "new" 2d style of games. The SNES/PS1 2d era was much more interesting. A lot of games look similarly styled now as artists are leaning towards styles that allow them to create faster.
Decided Id get one eventually anyway, so made the investment. Having tried them out first, I personally find the 3D works a lot better for some games than others. Pilotwings Resort was blurry sometimes, being faster paced and all over the place. It was also blurry around the edges, and I found myself trying to re-focus on the game several times. Nintendogs seemed a lot easier on the eye, being slow paced of course. The 3D also seems as I heard, in a box, more than popping out of the screen.
Edit: The Augmented Reality features seem really cool so far, can see this being used in a lot of games
I tried one a while ago and it was awful trying to get used to the 3D effect. Perhaps over time (I'd like to think so) it would get easier. I'll probably get a 3DS just because that's where the new games will be.
It really varies for me. Nintendogs and 3D photos etc seem fine, but fast moving things seem a little harder to get used to. Just realised the AR Game cards do more than I realised
I love the 3DS from top to bottom, it seems like it has so much to offer and I was so close to deciding on putting money aside to get one when it's released here... but that 3-5 hour battery life just kills it for me. I'll wait for either an updated device or a good replaceable battery comes along. Pity, I was excited too.
Also, considering the life on the PSP I'm going to assume that the NGP is going to be just as bad if not worse. Man, I really wish battery tech would improve as fast as everything else in hardware tech... or at the very least, engineers could try to be more efficient or reasonable about what kind of technology they put into a device that's supposed to be handheld and mobile - not tethered to an outlet, defeating the whole purpose for me.
I may not like Apple or any of their products (for a long list of reasons) but the iPad 2 shows the world exactly how you're supposed to upgrade a device. Twice as powerful, no impact on battery life.
I have a DS and that was great, it also had many great 2D games. I am not sure about the 3DS just yet though because i usually buy a console/handheld when it has a better range of games but i am sure this will happen and even with the 3D technology hopefully there will be a lot of standard 2D games also. Some 2D games would be cool with the 3d technology used for things like parallax layer scrolling also.
One thing i want Nintendo to do is more non-remake games for the popular series as it would be great to have some new Zelda, Metroid (2D) and Mario games.
Why do people constantly whine about a 3-5 hour battery life? You can't tell me you have enough time to play for that amount of time when you're not home and can't bring a charger with you. Nintendo was supposed to release a battery pak (at launch?) that had twice the lifespan anyway . . . what happened to that?
2 Unlike you, many people actually get away from home sometimes. I mostly used my GB/GBC/GBA/DS when I was on the move. Meaning on the road or on some mountain.
Hayo: Exploring the fjords, playing his DS . When you say on the road do you mean in a car?
The only thing there is to do here is shop for clothes and junk or visit one of two horrible, tiny arcades. I'd rather not waste my time, especially considering that the arcades don't even have the game I play and I own a dedicated cabinet for it.
For anyone curious, the 3DS supposedly has a 1300 mAh battery. Here are some possible alternatives.
I was caring enough to try and avoid doing anything that would make you post that since I know what a dork you are, but there it is anyway. It is comforting to know you always stay indoors though. OTHER PEOPLE TRAVEL AROUND, THEY HAVE A LIFE. MOBILE DEVICES ARE MADE FOR THOSE PEOPLE, YOU FUCKING RETARD.

Thats a car charger? lol
I posted alternatives for when you can and can't use a charger. A 2000mAh battery should technically last approx 1.5x as long as your standard 1300 mAh 3DS battery (if that is what is included.) Your 3-5 hour battery life suddenly becomes 4.5-7.5 hours at a very low cost.
Frankly with the unmodified battery scoring around 3-5 hours of battery life, a little more with 3D and other features turned off, I find it hard to believe that they're going to successfully pull off a Pokemon game with the 3DS. Don't get me wrong, I know they'll try... but considering the majority of their consumer market wont be going out and buying new batteries or modding their 3DS's with longer lasting batteries, it's going to be a tough sell. I can easily spend 6+ hours (total) playing Pokemon intermittently throughout my time out of the house, away from any place I can sit down and let it charge.
Also, the wire used to charge the 3DS, does that have a USB port? I've never seen a Nintendo handheld with a USB port and I haven't seen a 3DS in person or unboxed yet so I hope this isn't a stupid question but yeah, if so that might help for some people who have laptops or something like that.
Heck, my phone gets around 7 hours of battery life and once it dropped below 80% during the first half of the day, I was afraid to use it for anything that wasn't absolutely necessary because I never knew what was going to come up later in the day that might make me want to use it... be it either an important phone call, needing to look something up, or even boring bored enough to want to play a game or something.
I fear a 3-4 battery life on the 3DS might make me treat it the same way. I'd be afraid to play it for more then a few minutes, because I never knew if something would happen where I might stuck completely bored with nothing to do, and away from any power outlets. Prime example? Bus ride home from the city, that's a 45 minute ride right there, and could easily escalate far beyond that if traffic is bad.
It looks like an amazing little handheld device, I'm not out to bring it down... I really want one, but that battery life, for now, is a real deal breaker for me.
I haven't purchased (nor plan to purchase) a 3DS. I just want to add my unnecessary two cents to this conversation. Not really to flame or troll, but mostly to point out my whole issue with portable gaming that most people are aware of but just forget about when it comes to purchasing one...
1. Most of the time, everyone plays the damn hand-held in their house, don't deny it. Sure you go on a road trip and think, "OOO I'll bring my portable device and play it!", but what happens... Either you're too damn busy... you can't find it... or you do play it, only to realize that exploring the campsite is a hell of a lot more fun than what Mario is up to in a game you could just play a home! So just get a console...
2. Battery life isn't an issue, and if it is... You're the issue.... I'm not going to go into this any further... i tried and I just look like a super meanie grumpy face....
3. Wait for the Super 3DS Xi L Elite Pro Plus Pocket XTRA3D version (you'll find it coming out right when the next gameboy is coming out, you know, so it's also obsolete as soon as you buy it). That's the version that will have everything the originally designed it with, but took out, because they knew it's not as marketable to sell one version for 5 years.
thinking is like pong, it's easy, but you miss sometimes.

This argument would be slightly effective if the 3DS had no games on it. But it does. Games that you won't see on other systems. I don't mean 3D games because the Xbox 360 and PS3 play those. I'm talking about specific games. "I want to play Pokemon Black!" "Just get a Wii and Pokemon Battle Revolution because they're the same thing." Except they aren't.

Yeah lets purchase a console and miss out on tons of great games that are exclusive to handhelds.

Alright, well that's a little better than I thought. I honestly wasn't sure. I mean I know things like MP3 players, phones, etc all have USB ports now, but I wasn't sure if handhelds made the jump yet.
I don't play Call of Duty. And let me tell YOU something!
<Insert large paragraph why you're wrong>
<Insert larger paragraph why I'm right and continue to point out you're naivete>
<Insert concluding paragraph of how knowledgeable I am, how there is no way I'm wrong, and again you're dumb>
(await reply of your less-than-witty response that makes me even more angry, in turn I take it out on my cat who didn't even do anything and has no knowledge of what a 3DS is.)
P.S. Two cents are just that.....

Enjoy your Call of Duty.
I completely agree with the three points.
Enjoy playing your unchallenging, non-violent, basic games that were designed for 8 year olds.
Discarded pizza boxes are an indispensable source of cheese.
So what games do you have and what do you think of them? While the 3d in ridge racer is cool I don't think it looks any better than the PSP version of ridge racer. Also I think they ripped off asphalt with cars coming at you now. Also asphalt on my phone looks better than ridge racer on the 3ds.
I still don't like the idea of having two screens. I find it to be a bit useless and I never look at it anyways. I only focus on the main screen where the action is.
What I really enjoyed where the cards and the fact it would put my surrounding on a mesh and distorted it. Also the fact I had to walk around the card to shoot the targets was pretty bad ass.

Isn't that the point for most games? Most of the time your menu/stats are displayed on the screen you use the least. It allows for more dynamic menu systems where you don't have to pause the game and can perform more actions on the fly.

I'd take the "slow" pause screen over a higher resolution screen (that can fit stats on it more comfortably) over a second battery draining screen. Only reason I want a DS is for the exclusives. I've used a DS and the only game I find that truly utilizes the screen in a manner that would be heavily inefficient to play without, is Phoenix Wright. Otherwise, you'd have to be pretty artistically impaired not to know how to make use of screen-space in a way that's both visually pleasing and functionally efficient. Especially if you made the pixel density a lot higher so that the menus aren't a huge waste of space just to be legible.
I play my 3DS in tons of places. Work on break, over at a friends house (after watching him play face raiders), the toilet, the living room (while kiddos are asleep).
I simply do not have the time/inclination to sit down and play a console game. The only HDTV we have is in the bedroom, and the only time I'd be able to use it is when the kids are asleep. Being a busy parent, it's hard to find time to sit down and play a game for more than 15 minutes. That's great for something like the DS/3DS/PSP, close the lid and pick it up later.
When my kids are older, I'm sure I'll get back into the consoles; but the 360 and PS3 are pretty much dead for me. I see tons of games I'd love to play (3D Dot Games Heroes, New Vegas, others I can't remember because I've worked 28 hours in the last 2 days), but it's pretty much impossible for me.
On another note; I can't wait for a Castlevania game on this thing. Order of Ecclesia was a fantastic game. Brought back memories of playing Circle of the Moon on my import GBA.
Back on topic. I think my friend might like a 3DS, so I might buy her one for Christmas. She says she isn't a huge gamer, but she seemed to be a bit interested in the DS, so I think she may enjoy it.
I didn't particularly enjoy what I played of Cave Story either.
I wonder when they plan to enable 3DSWare and Netflix and video recording and the internet browser. My computer is overheating right now so I can't watch Netflix stuff on it. It'd be nice to be able to on my 3DS.
I wouldn't say that... Adam didn't like the game but it doesn't mean his opinion doesn't count if the general reviews say it's a good game
Anyhow, I'm going to wait for a few months and see what comes out. Animal Crossing 3DS, PilotWings and Zelda: Ocarina of Time all appeal to me, but right now not a lot else does.
