Portal was really short but really quite fun. Everyone I know agrees on that, even friends who generally dislike the FPS genre. Plus I got it bundled in the Orange Box, so it was pennies anyway.

For Clyde Frog to call a game he has not even played awful I find hypocritical at best - it's just more of his predictable bad trolling.

Who are you to say what games I have and haven't played? All valve does is rehash their same bs and re-release it - as seen with Half Life, Left For Dead, Portal, etc. PS: Portal isn't really a FPS . . . lol

DDR is okay for an hour or two I guess. I do play ITG when I have time. Awkward sentence time! What does my opinion on games that I think are good have to do with someone likening disliking portal to disliking puzzle games in general?

I liked Portal a lot the first time around, but that's about it. Repeat-playing a puzzle game is really just a chore. I'll give Portal 2 a go when I get a chance to play it through for free, I don't absolutely need it - $50 for about 8 hours (I estimated from my friend's playing time) of game, and I wont be able to play the co-op mode. Heck, a game will have to look REALLY good for me to consider paying anything over 20 after my disappointment with Bulletstorm.

Adam: I walked over a big Portal 2 advertisment sticker in the train station yesterday. Thats about as close as Ill get to it, I guess.
Clyde Frog: I haven't even done as much as this, thankfully.

You said so yourself in respect to Portal 2, yet you have an "informed" opinion on the game. No crystal balls here, just the ability to read.

We know Portal isn't really an FPS, but to my non gaming friends it kind of falls into a similar category at first glance.

If you can't afford Portal 2, just warez it. I've already paid for a few copies of Portal 2 via the illegal advertising Valve decided to shove into Counter-Strike 1.6, a game which I paid for.

I'm pretty sure gamester is just trolling again. Accusing valve, the most innovative gaming company out there, of just rehashing? Valve is one of the few companies I can count on to reinvent a genre and make it feel totally new. They also never rush their development which i also love, because it means we never get a New Vegas from them.

Portal 2 a rehash? Portal 2 too short? Screw you guys, it is neither. Maybe it's short if you rush through and don't immerse yourself in the story, which has some of the best writing and voice acting in any game Ive played. There are so many new mechanics as the game doesn't focus solely on the portal gun like the first did.

I understand you guys who can't afford it. But it's no more pricey than any of the other new games out there. I'm usually pretty thrifty and wait for steam sales (which are always really awesome, another reason i love valve).

When was the last time Valve made a game that didn't use a first person perspective though?

why does a company have to create games across multiple genres? valve succeeds at making shooters. where is this rehashing you speak of? just because they use the same engine, perspective, and similar mechanics? bullshit. each entry of the half life series improves on the previous. l4d2 is an improvement on l4d. portal 2 is an improvement on portal. tf2 is an improvement on tf. in case you aren't aware, thats what sequels are supposed to be, improvements on previous iterations. none of these games have ANYTHING in common with each other (speaking of course of series not individual games. obviously half life games are related to each other etc), other than sharing the same perspective and game mechanics. first person perspective shooters. this is what valve does best. don't shit on their games just because you don't particularly enjoy them, or have personal issues with the company.

i haven't heard anyone deny that portal 2 is a fantastic game. most people are mature enough, and objective enough, to know when a game is good regardless of whether they like the game, its genre, the developers, etc.

I got the PC version for $35 by pre-ordering it on Amazon.com
Also, if you get the PS3 version, you get the PC version for free - and it's cross platform multiplayer, so the PS3 version is by far the best deal of them all, unless of course you have no intention to play on PS3. In which case, my $35 was the best deal.

Anyway, one of the best games I've ever played. It's significantly longer than Portal 1, over 8 hours if you're having fun with it. Not including the impressive and very fun co-op campaign mode. Plus, once the SDK comes out, I will be all over it with Hammer, making levels left and right.

Portal 2 makes Portal 1 seriously look like nothing but a tech demo. It's puzzles are far more involved, with the addition of faith plates, light platforms, three different types of liquid gels that you can spread around levels, lasers, etc, and at no point does it ever get repetitive or boring.

I can understand if there are some people who just don't like puzzle games, but if you even remotely enjoyed Portal 1, it would be an outright sin not to play Portal 2. With the exception of the first few introductory puzzles (to get non-Portal players adjusted to the game), absolutely none of the puzzles play or solve the same. In fact, even the introductory puzzles solve mildly different and the story does a great job tying everything together. It's also beyond hilarious - but was to be expected at this point.

My point? If you loved Portal 1, trust me... Portal 2 is not just more of the same old stuff.

And yeah, if you're looking to get the best bang for your buck... get the PS3 version, not the Xbox 360 version. Steam for PS3 will unlock the PC version for you for free via the Steam Cloud, and like I said, it's cross platform so you can play PS3 and PC co-op together. If you're afraid to drop $50 on it, don't be. Not only is it a full game, but despite a lack of good re-playability, this is by far a hell of a lot better than almost any other $50 game I played. And that's not even taking into consideration the co-op, which I haven't even finished yet.

This might seem like a bit of a broad ignorant statement, but frankly - the people who think $50 is expensive, are basing their idea ENTIRELY on the idea that Portal 1 was so short. But see, Portal 1 was only $20 after it was BUNDLED with the Orange Box... which was $50 for 5 games. So Portal 1, considering it's length, was fairly priced. Portal 2, is not only fairly priced, but consider it's quality ratio to other games in the same price range, either other games are severely overpriced, or Portal 2 is actually under priced, take your pick.
If your reasoning is just because you don't have the money, that's fine - at least that's honest, but you can't dismiss the game for not being worth the price when the only defining factor you're basing your judgement off of, is Portal 1's length. Because if you were basing it off of reviews, your justification on the price would probably be a lot more different then "It's not worth it" Because almost everyone whose bought and played the game, will probably disagree with you whole heartedly.
But then again, what do I know? I only paid $35 for it? Actually, when I pre-ordered it.. it was $45, but the price came down before it shipped and I got the lowered price from Amazon, so yeah... price wasn't a variable for me.

Sorry this post is long, I just really enjoyed this game and think it's worth beyond every penny they ask for it. There is no game in the last few years, that is so polished, had so much attention to detail, so well put together, as Portal 2.

And like I said, if you're not interested... that's fine, I'm not and hopefully no one else is going to force you into buying it and playing it... but don't put down Valve or Portal 2. You may not be interested, but frankly I don't care much for Zelda, despite everyone insisting it's great. Point being, just because you're not interested, doesn't mean everyone else needs to be converted to dismiss it too.
