There seems to be a problem with my battery
When plugged in, it says "68% (Charging)" and the light is on to say it's charging - but it never goes above 68% and won't run off battery power (it needs to be plugged in to do anything).
It's a reasonably new computer, and this problem has just appeared overnight - it's not like the battery has gradually lost the ability to hold charge.
Anyone have any suggestions of things to try? Preferably without buying a new battery...
Cheers

My netbook had a bug in the charging and battery monitoring circuitry/software. I seem to remember having to fully cycle the battery for it to work right again...
Can you get it to run off the battery in BIOS? If not I suspect the battery monitor is giving bullshit readings, if it can run off the battery in BIOS let the laptop run until the low voltage hardware cut-out kicks in (Lithium batteries tend to set on fire or explode if the voltage drops below 3V per cell, hence there is always a hardware cut-out). Then let it fully charge and see if it behaves .
Its hard to say whether its the laptop or battery at fault. I hope you brought it from a UK shop. Under the sales of goods act you are entitled to your money back, replacement or repair (you do not have to accept repair though) if the product is not of a "satisfactory quality" or it is "not fit for purpose" (magic legal keywords). The responsibility is on the SHOP and not the manufacturer. So many UK shops are telling customers bullshit to do as little as possible, to evade their responsibility and costs of such responsibility.
I got a refund on my Alienware laptop after 5 months (HDD/Sata controller kept failing). They told me the refund period was over and I was only entitled to repair. After speaking to this guys manager, and reminding them of UK Law, of which their policies can not overwrite I got a full refund .

Thanks guys. It won't do anything at all on battery alone - it's completely dead.
I think I'll wait til my parents next come visit, as they have the same make of netbook and I might be able to try with their battery.
