Make a never-ending shoot-em-up in space.

Make a never-ending platform collect-a-thon where you jump higher and higher on clouds. Your goal is to eventually make it rain by collecting stuff somehow.

Find a way to combine Frogger and bowling game mechanics.

Think of the most horrible game idea you can come up with, and how someone would make a high score in it.

Come up with a game based on the third non-Football-related headline on yahoo dot com.

Make a birds-eye view castle-building game where the day time is filled with attacks and construction can happen only at night.

Make a game using the segmented "Arm Example" engine on this site: http://www.castles-of-britain.com/mmfexamples-a.htm
It's about a third of the way down the page.

Make a turn-based (instead of real-time) Pachinko game where you can choose where your Pachinko puck will bounce.

...Those are some ideas for starters.

I also had a lot of starter ideas but none of them were good, so basically you and me had a very similar train of thought. I want to create something a bit more serious, something with awesome game mechanics, something with a compelling story, something with replayability. Not just something you can win in 5 minutes and then forget about it for ever more.

Do you already have a catalogue of forgettable games?

If not, then I suggest you make some. It's nice to have a finished game every once in a while, regardless of how short or "forgettable" it is.

If you already have a dozen or two small games under your belt (and I'm totally serious), then start a design document, a story board, or other serious, deliberate design tool that will help you finish your project.

Also, by the time you've come up with a score or so forgettable games, you will have collected a sizable collection of code/event snippets that you can combine together to make one or more big games.

Take heart: there's nothing bad about coming up with a small game. Each small step brings you closer to that big game on the horizon. And there's a lot to be said about actually finishing a project, no matter how small.

I'm kinda bordering on the philosophical now, but my main point is that the kind of accomplishment you're seeking doesn't just fall in your lap. Build your technique, your skill, and your discipline with less-ambitious goals and projects. Then bigger games will emerge in time without you noticing it.

EDIT: Or go here to repeat the above process:

I'm 100% behind what S-M-R said. With Click Tools, I've made six complete games to date. I've also made a couple of screen savers. Before that, I struggled with spaghetti code basic, and one of the first game making programs called the Virtual Reality Studio. Each time I complete something, I become more knowledgeable and confident. Things that frustrated me before are less frustrating, and I have learned to be more organized throughout the entire process.

I'd also like to add that there is a benefit to our hobby beyond making the next Angry Birds and becoming rich. It's an enjoyable hobby that keeps our minds sharp and provides some degree of entertainment to others; even if it's only in our small group.

So, make something, post it, and I'll give you feedback on it. Other people probably will too.

Send me feedback on my latest game, It Never Ends.

I did make some small forgettable games but I couldn't think to mention them because I had forgotten them and I need something not necessarily long and hard but something worthwhile.
The random game generator that you have suggested has no sanity even when you turn it on.

Ok, let's start with what I wanted and use some sanity.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_mechanics
Most games have direct control of the protagonist to interact with resources, goods and other characters. Even a simple platform game or artillery game have good game mechanics.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narrative
All games that aren't boring have a story to sufficiently immerse you in. Even something as simple as save the damsel in distress is more than enough motivation for any random gamer.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replay_value
There are many ways to do this such as difficulty levels (easy, medium, hard), multiple level paths/endings, different character builds, even special secrets levels and even achievements that unlock stuff.

And let's apply even more sanity.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_genres
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_genres
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Setting_(fiction)

Just looking at these got more creative juices flowing than anything either of you have suggested, very sorry but that's true.

No need for an apology, thanks. And when all that sanity helps you come up with a "worthwhile" game (whatever that means), be sure to share the news here at TDC.

I think EBBC was referring to hard work and discipline.
