How many platform games can you think of that allow you to explore freely? Please give a full name and description of the game.
Nangoku Syonen Papuwa Kun[SNES]- based on an anime. Plays like Super Mario World, but you fight with punches and kicks. You can also gain levels. Crazy stuff.
Cosmo Police Galivan[NES]- what you get when you cross breed Metroid and RPGs. You can find special weapons that have multiple uses, but require crystal points. If you fill your GP meter, you'll get a cyborg suit that has a seperate life bar. You also can get upgrades like Cosmo Boots to jump higher and the Cosmo Power to block bullets.
Wonderboy 5: Wonderboy in Monster World[Genesis]- Looks a bit like Chaos Gate, actually! The coolest part is spinning the spear (Up+Attack). It blocks shots and damages enemies, which almost makes it better than the swords.
Metroid[Famicom Disk System]- like the original, but you can actually save, and there is an extra sound channel, making the music even better.
All the games besides Wonderboy are in Japanese. Get a translation at donut.parodius.com.
Please continue the list!

Nothing, the geometry has to end somewhere.
Though what you mean (load-free, free-roaming platformers) are becoming the new trend in the 'new age' platformers like Jak and Daxter or Ratchet and Clank. Which are good, by the way.

There should be more games that allow this kinda thing.
Although I think it's best left for more complex games, like your RPG's, adventures, or just games with a non-linear plot or game structure.
I'd definately like to see more.

im trying to make the most nonlinear rpg ever cause in that rpg every char. has its own personality and they say different stuff to you depending on how they feel how much they like you and stuff that happends in the world. (btw the world will be endless so if you want you could just walk left for like forever)
Beware of life ...so far noone have survived it.......

I love Jak & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank. They are both very fun, high quality games. I'd love to see more like them.

Elite was a free-roaming game, but it had no platforms. You were in space, see? Anyway, no, I dunno. Linearity is a mixed blessing.

Demon's Crest (SNES). So exploratory and non-linear it has 4 endings.
I like GargQuest2 better tho...

Yes, Demon's Crest was a very cool game, but the method of getting one of the crests is totally irrational. Gargoyle's Quest 2 was interesting, but there was no reason to replay a level.
Ufouria[NES]- unlike Metroid, you never get lost once you find the map. And you get to stomp on creampuffs and drooling mutated frogs! Of course, any druggie wouldn't find this to be something out of the ordinary.
Akuji the Demon[PC]- one of the best freeware games of its kind. It's not nearly as difficult as Eternal Daughter, and it has lots of neat powers. If it had an automap, this would be much easier.
Sorcerian[PC,Genesis]- it's the closest to an RPG any platformer has ever gotten. Control a four-member party on missions to get money to buy new equipment and... play more missions! Only the PC-DOS version is in English.
Monsterworld IV[Genesis]- It has the most movement abilities of all the Monsterworld/Wonderboy games. You can dash, drop down from platforms, and some other stuff I don't remember. My question is, why did they remove the boots from this game? Those were the best items in the whole series!
Adventure Island 4[NES]- Similar to Metroid, but it can be rather annoying to die constantly from not being given a big enough life bar. Otherwise, it's pretty good.
And if only parts of a game have exploration, then be sure to say so.
Oh! My god.
