I was thinking, how would one go about making a text engine for a top down rpg (think FF, Lufia etc.) ? -and how about the battle engine ? these 2 very important questions stopped me over and over again, from actually making an rpg

im making an rpg and slowly working it all out
there is a lot of loading from ini
i may just use the edit object to display speech
the battle engine will be suited to my game so it will not be very good as a tutorial.

This suggestion'll save you loads of time:
Just *don't* use a 'traditional' turnbased RPG-style battle system anyway. It's easier to code realtime battles, and heck it's not as if turnbased was actually *fun*!? Lol.
Heh, sorry, I accept that some people like it (retards)(jk). PLEASE, don't make it switch to a different view when they do it though? PLEASE!? It's just...not...right...

Hmm. "ppl prefer to use less skill in an rpg. its true. its damn true"-No it's not. Battles like Y... are very hard, and you need to think a lot in them.
I like Turn-Based Battles because you have to think more, like, "should I do this or that?" But realtime is also good because you can have a lot of action. Why do I have to pick one over the over? I like them both! WHY DAMN YOU WHY!!?!?!?!

turn based = strategy (like in Pokémon, fire pokémon are vulnerable to water attacks etc.)
realtime = action, which is less RPG'ish.
So it's up to the creator. I personally prefer turn based because strategy is harder to implement in a game, and it's more entertaining

It's all good...
Realtime = Link to the Past, Secret of Mana
Turn Based = Lufia, Final Fantasy (all 8 gazillion of them)
Games we love!

Gives me the butterflies,
Gives me away,

I'm feeling outshined.

Since you like both, include both in the game...(like an option to set to different battle system) That will takes you tons of time.

how can you have a realtime battle engine in a game with more than one main character?
you cant really can you.
real time is fine for zelda type games
turn based is fine for final fantasy type games.

To be honest, the realtime battle in Secret of whatever really disappointed me. When i played it for the 1st time. I was excited to get playing after watching the intro, and then i found out it used realtime battle...then i was like *barf* ...i kept playing, but i couldn't help feeling the game's value had deteriorated...
