Myself, Circy and Wong Chung Bung had a bit of a chinwag regarding a set of rules for the site. These AREN'T official yet, I just wanted to see what you guys thought:
- No Defamatory language directed at others - swearing in general is permittable but not desired.
- No mindless insulting of others.
- No registration of false accounts or impersonating other users
- No racial, ethnic, or religious slur.
- All posts should be written in coherent English. "1337" language etc, or txt mssg tlk, is frowned upon and should be avoided.
- No repeat postings of games - previews must be updated rather than reposted. Hyping games in forums not allowed.
- Constructive criticism only, to be taken well or not at all.
- Admins will always attempt to be impartial and fair.
- Admins will always give reasons for topic locking or deletion, be it privately or publicly.
- Attempts to interfere with the appearance of the site - e.g. trying to use invalid HTML tags or posting very long strings (thus fouling up the page) are not allowed.
- Downloads and Previews must contain at least 1 INGAME screenshot... not menu pictures or concept art.
- A Minimum word limit on download descriptions and articles will apply.
- Articles must be well written, spell checked and neatly formatted.
- Articles must only state factual information - the boards are used to express opinion.
- Any admin decision is final.
- No restarting a topic when it has been locked or raising an issue when it has been deemed resolved by an admin.
Please, I must stress, if you want to reply to this topic, remember we are talking about RULES ONLY and not features or changes you want made to how the site works.
Pete:
I still don't agree with the screenshot thing or the word limit on downloads. I mean, most games are hosted on sites that don't allow remote linking.
Nor do I agree with the any admin decision should be final thing. It's a massive excuse that's brought down many businesses.
And I hope you guys will be loose on the coherent English thing as well as the bit on 'proper articles'. Most of the world can barely speak English. Although the DC is an English site, I suggest you lay it easy on the non-English speakers.
The article law should be that the articles are legible and informative. I've seen some very poorly written yet very useful articles that were written by people struggling to speak English.
invaderzim:
Hmm... topics that have caused flame wars over the past:
1. Anything mentioning girls in it
2. Recruitment efforts (when someone gets turned down)
3. Debates (even the logical MMF vs TGF ones)
4. Which PC/console is the best
5. Who's the stupidest/most annoying/etc admin/member
6. Religion
7. Anything that even goes against someone's beliefs. I once witnessed a flame war because someone mentioned "VB (visual basic) sucks"
And I'm sure there's lots more out there. Point is, there's too much out there.
Disclaimer: Any sarcasm in my posts will not be mentioned as that would ruin the purpose. It is assumed that the reader is intelligent enough to tell the difference between what is sarcasm and what is not.
Oh, here's another one:
- Use somewhat descriptive titles. No "NEED HELP" titles in the forums or downloads with the title "Action/RPG" (unless that's the name of the game).
Disclaimer: Any sarcasm in my posts will not be mentioned as that would ruin the purpose. It is assumed that the reader is intelligent enough to tell the difference between what is sarcasm and what is not.
Finally, some rules. You guys better stick to them. If i'm going to actually download a game from here, I want a screenshot so I know that i'm not wasting my time.
Yes because you obviously have many other fruitful activities to resort to, Rhys.
Show me the power child,
I'd like to say,
That I'm down on my knees today,
Gives me the butterflies,
Gives me away,
'Til I'm up on my feet again,
I'm feeling outshined.
As Muz said:
- Use somewhat descriptive titles. No "NEED HELP" titles in the forums or downloads with the title "Action/RPG" (unless that's the name of the game).
I'd like to expand it a little. I know one click website which has forums on which all users in topics must use "[ ]" and write in it about what is this topic
Example topics:
[TGF problem]How to avoid falling from platforms
[MIDI]What midi would match to my logic game
[TDC]"Report broken link" needed
[Off-topic]How old are you all
This would make it much easier to get to the topics in which you are interested.
Pete, about all rules: I hope that there won't be any person allowed not to obey to the rules -> only one "bad" TDCman would ruin all discipline, you know.
Everything was okay about a month ago. I blame it all on christmas.
Anyway, everything was fine, except for rules being too lenient in some places such as previews and articles. Now the rules have gone rediculously strict, it should go back to the way it was and all the idiots should calm down, then everything would be fine again.
I don't know about that Aspara.
I wish I knew 1337 just for the sake of it, but you're right.
-Above post is ancient and probably irrelevant-
An old account of mine, recently cleared out. It's a blast to the past, the age was marked as 14 when I found it. If you know where to look, you can track me. Au revoir.
This is dictatorship drivel, sorry but is and thats my honest opinion, so if i have all/some of my dc points removed becuase of an admins wrong decision, it should stand because of the rules.
I wont mention names but some time ago a certain unscrupulous admin kept deleting my 3dsmax article, AND subtracting points, i had go to Shadowcaster and the unscrupulous admin to get it sorted out, and to get my points back, under this new rule, no can do, forget the fact i was trying to teach and help people, as the admins decision is correct.
This one is severely wrong, no community site has such a ludiocrous rule!

with the english thing, we aren't planning on being harsh with it at all, we just want everyone to be able to read what others are saying.
as for screenshots, you can over-ride direct linking rules by using invis.anonomizer etc. also, many tutorials for using ISP webspace are around, and we may even start offering a bit of space here for image hosting if the demand is high enough.
snerlin; that rule refers to any argument that a topic can link on to, like that debate with MMF vs TGF. you saw what happened when i personally tried to restart it; the whole thing just descended into an argument again very quickly.
the ability to edit previews can be added easily, so that wont be a problem. previews still appear in your profile no matter how old they are, and you could always attract attention to them in your sig or something (NOT making a forum post about it, mind)
it seems the "an admin decision is final" is the least popular. this was sort of added in at the end, we didn't really discuss it that much or think about the consequences. it needs rewording, definetly, but if everyone contested every admin decision it would be a sorry place here. we'll get back to you with that one.
Come to think of it, that does seem a bit harsh. If you need to contest an admin's decision you should do it privately and not in public on the boards, how does that sound?
It's quite hard to believe that someone with a rating of Cheese is laying down a set of rules
Anyway, on to the contestion.
- Downloads and Previews must contain at least 1 INGAME screenshot... not menu pictures or concept art.
Screenshots should be more advised than needed. Most people don't know how to use an anonymising service, and they're blocked on many public computers. Oh, and there's also programs which might not need screenshots, that run in the background.
- All posts should be written in coherent English. "1337" language etc, or txt mssg tlk, is frowned upon and should be avoided.
Some people lack the brainpower to properly type. I didn't think it was fair to not allow people a chance to post if they can't type properly. One s in msg.
- A Minimum word limit on download descriptions and articles will apply.
Beware the ides of people who put a load of gibberish to fill it up
- No repeat postings of games - previews must be updated rather than reposted. Hyping games in forums not allowed.
This has been argued in the thread, I think. You can't update previews, and no-one will look; adding an Update Preview which deletes the old one and makes a new one would be nice. Again, have restrictions, so you can't just hype it up even more.
- Any admin decision is final.
That's just harsh. See Hagar's case. There should always be a way to contest a closing or deletion.
Some other rules I've made up:
- No asking to become admins. "We'll ask for you" stuff.
- Post in the right forum, and keep on-topic.
- Do not throw stones at this rule.
You do realise that people will still break them, and this is only to justify deleting members? Almost nobody reads message board rules - usually common sense suffices, but some people don't have any or don't care about rules.
Applause to the admins. Much better suggestion this time Pete.
I still think it needs something ... I may have a go at it in the near future ... to do my own brainstorming ... maybe I could inspire you ... or maybe not .
I think that people who don't have hosting which allows remote linking should include the screenshot links in the game description so that others can copy and paste these images in new windows.
But for image hosting ONLY you should try using www.villagephotos.com
They allow remote linking for free. I think.

Come on, those rules are not harsh at all. I can point out lots of sites which have much stricter rules (such as the Clickteam website where, if you noticed, flamewars can not be found). Now I am not saying this place should be as strict as the CT forums, but the CT forums do prove that rules can help make the place more civilized. It's perfectly reasonable to have a minimum word limit, and to require AT LEAST one screenshot. Otherwise people post previews of games that they have not even started on yet. By the way, I think a minimum word limit should apply to previews too.
Also, I think it's good that the rules define what an article is exactly.
99 percent chance that the above post is 100 percent correct.
I agree with all these rules, I do also understand what other people are saying, they have good points. The screen shot and word thing I like, I do not download games without screen shots (If its just a random game). And the language thing, how people type poorly, I think its no excuse, if you have 1 brain + 2 hands + 10 fingers (5 on each hand) = you can type correctly, people are just lazy (Thats IF if they know english).
Chicken14528:
Yeah whatevah.... *shakes head*
I think the admins are doing a goob job.
We are the music makers, we are the dreamers of dreams...
1-of course the admins have more power than the rest of us, that's why they're admins..
2-If you don't know english, and you're not willing to write stuff in english, it's too bad, then go away! ...there's nothing more irritating than clicking a link for a game and finding that it's written in french, or something silly like that.. there's a reason why it's called "The Daily Click" and not "Det Daglige Klik" or something foreign like that....
3-Minimum word limit, and minimum 1 pic = good . That way, there's a greater chance of there not being any quick submissions, with no words...i say yay to those rules.
Look, you seem like an immature kid. I don't like to patronize others but some people tend to forget that on the Internet they communicate with real people, often adults. Sadly, since people are anonymous on the net kids like you think that you can behave whatever you like. Like the lowest kind of pricks and diwmits. Rules are here to improve the quality of the site and community. And because of the people like you, who don't respect others and their effort, these rules a necessary. And please, don't clog my brain with anarchistic hogwash because I'm gonna puke.
<a href="http://lachie.phatcode.net">The Maker Of Stuff</a>
unfortunatly village photos dont do remote linking for free users anymore. it screwed up the screenshots in all my downloads (must get round to sorting them out).
I aggree with most of the rules. not sure about the screenshot one. though if dc gave members limeted hosting of pictures that would be excellent.
Yeah, sorry about the village photos tip. But like I said, you can include the screenshot links in the game description. BTW, I can host your screenshots if you like. I feel generous today. Email me.
<a href="http://lachie.phatcode.net">The Maker Of Stuff</a>
Chicken, what makes you think YOU deserve power after your recent insults and swearing at TDC? If we gave everyone power, it'd just be abused. I hate to use Ashman as an example of this, but I'm using Ashman as an example of this. He was made an admin, he abused his responsibilities that go with the job, he got fired.
Anyway, it's not a case of power. Every single community has rules. They have to, to maintain order. Even the animal kingdom has rules in certain species. The world needs rules to keep it in check.
As for the English typing, that clearly is NOT racist. This is an English site. The majority of us speak English, while we get visitors from other countries. If you want a community which speaks your own language, GO AND FIND ONE.
Besides, we wouldn't need rules if it weren't for idiots such as yourself
But I had fun, and that's the bottom line as far as I'm concerned... FUN!

Exactly! This is an english
site, as well as the fact that
english is the most common
language.

An old account of mine, recently cleared out. It's a blast to the past, the age was marked as 14 when I found it. If you know where to look, you can track me. Au revoir.
Admins exist to maintain order. Maintaining order is done through rules.
You have not seen Admin "nazis" as I have, I'm sure. I wouldn't use the term "nazi", myself, anyway... because that's like a really bad derogatory word... (crap!)
Here's an idea that may help you guys find a proper place to host your pictures and stuff for your games without being hit by sites like Geocities who don't allow linking off of their site onto other sites. Ask your folks, or who ever pays for your ISP, or check with your ISP if you pay for it, if you get some form of free Internet upload FTP space. I use Cox Cable services for my Internet and I get about 20MB of free space (I think), and I'm allowed to link things from my FTP onto other sites as I please. Now, if I'd only just get into that FTP space and use it so I can upload some worthwhile user and signature pictures...
Well this text is all well and good, but you've got to make sure your rules are formatted correctly. Size 7, flashing inverting background - ask Circy to do it, he's got a knack for making horrific images stick in our mind. Otherwise people will forget after 2 minutes and then you get the oxymoron known as controlled anarchy.
"- All posts should be written in coherent English. "1337" language etc, or txt mssg tlk, is frowned upon and should be avoided."
When we write our posts in English, the computer recieves everything we write as binary code, so we are actually writing in binary onto TDC. I don't think this would allow us to post onto TDC since computers can't speak English. Lol!
As long as ashman is here, this site's rules will not have total control. But don't ban him; he's very funny. It6 wouldn't be TDC without him. (It may seem like I'm kissing his ass; I'm actually not. His crude humor makes this place better.)
Edit: Removed said "crude humor".

It's clearly not racist. Every language other than english just happens to suck.
Except maybe klingon, but that doesn't count. Stupid klingons.

yes darmani, i am aware of our very large chinese user base here. since we've never had anyone here who says they are chinese. and the internet is practically banned in china.
and worry not, i'm sure we'll be able to get the rules up in a highly visible place.
I'm all for the no insulting/discrimination of others.
All for the typing in coherent English
All for the no spamming
Definately for the constructive cristism, mainly because i've brought that up oh so many times before.
The admin stuff worries me a bit, but I can live with it...but stick by them FFS!
I definately agree with the word limit thing. I think users should write at least like 200 words or something like that, just so people actually no what it's about.
And I think they should have at least one in-game screen shot, even if it's hosted on a crappy server like Geocities.
Yeah, and that's it. Yeah
