At the moment, I'm in a bit of a dilema. Mr Stumps Dentures is very nearly finished (one final boss left, plus general tidying up), and I can beat all the levels in about forty minutes. However, my brother tried this game, and he said it was far too hard. A couple of beta testers have also said this, but some have said its fairly easy as well. Henceforth my problem.
At the moment MSD uses a save game feature in which you have to play the entire game, final boss included, and then you can replay any level you want. But based on these comments about the challenge (and I really dont think its hard, but meh, Im the author), do you reckon that having the game save after each level is finished a better bet?

If the game is shared up in chapters, acts etc. ; make the game save when you have finished one "part".

save after each level, zone, or whatever the smallest incriment of play is. I hate games where i die and have to start all over from the beginning (*cough*Zone Runner 2*ahem*).. I play computer games as a quick pass time when i'm bored, i'll never find enough time to play a game for 40 minutes straight. A MAN HAS TO PEE!

Generally Im with Pete ... saving should often be done on a frequent basis. It depends greatly on the difficulty, the way the game works etc...
If you knew, I would have to kill you...

Well, it's not an easy choice. I am guessing you designed the game around not saving every level so allowing the player to save after every level could make the game to easy. If you allow saving after every level you might have to make the game harder to compensate for it. For example, many FPS's allow you to save at anytime but the challenge level is high to compensate for the fact that you can save anywhere. Maybe you could allow the player to save at the end of each level the first time through and then unlock a special "challenge mode" that does not allow you to save anywhere. This mode could also have other things that make it harder like less lives.
99 percent chance that the above post is 100 percent correct.

Yup Jon, you are Once I've done the final boss, betas will be handed out to the selected individuals: Jon (Smegsoft), Aku, Chris Nimmo, Broomie, Citizen, JD (Heretic Emu Studios). I think that was all of them
Or yeah, I could go with an idea from Mr Coffee and make two versions of MSD - an easy one, which saves after every level, but maybe doesn't have the unlockables, or a hard version, which only saves at the end of the game, and unlocking the secrets.
Damn this is a hard moment.

And what happened the last time someone claimed something could be done in 40-odd minutes?
Save game after each level is better. I'm not playing solidly for 40 minutes.
Oh, and another thing: Could you include a timer for all the levels? It might be interesting to see how fast people can beat it. Like elma, or something.

But make the timers either invisible until you beat the level, or so you can make them invisible. I always get distracted staring at the counting numbers...

You could have a hardcore mode where you play all the levels without saving and unlock the best stuff.
and normal mode where it saves after every level and unlocks something lesser
theres no need for two versions

Whoops, forgot to mention. Extra lives can be earnt if a boss is defeated without you getting hurt. Would that sway decisions?
