Get dsl because it is WAY faster than dial up and it save lots of money because you dont have to pay for minutes with dial up.Your telephone company probably can hook ya up with dsl becuase all ya need is a phone jack.

Zim: not all areas are serviced by DSL, "you dont have to pay for minutes", most Dial-Up packages now have Unlimited hours and Unlimited Download's.

I would say the problem is most likely caused by a bad line between your home and the local telephone exchange, so the signal has a very high error rate, causing the poor speeds.
DSL generally needs a good line to create a connection (usually requiring at most a distance of 3km from the exchange) so I'm not sure if that will help, though it may, depending on what type of DSL you get.
More stable would be a cable connection in your case, though that isnt as available as DSL, plus it is more expensive, so I dont know what the best option would be in your case (I suppose it depends on how much you can afford).
I think you should see if DSL is available where you live (every company that I have seen that provides DSL accounts has an option to let you check if it's available to you by entering your phone number online [this is free]). So I would recommend you start there.
The "connection speeder" programs you referred to wouldnt help your connection at all. These work in two ways:
1. Dial-up connections "reserve" part of the available bandwidth for other connections. That is, if you start a download going it will only use part of the available speed, the rest will be reserved for other things you might do on the internet, i.e. browsing, so that you can do more than one thing at the one time. These programs will usually prevent that from happening, so the entire connection is used for anything that is using the internet (i.e. if you're browsing while downloading, half the bandwidth will be used for browsing, half for downloading, with none in reserve). At such a slow connection speed, the difference would be next to nothing.
2. When you're browsing the internet it tries to "guess" where you will go next, and downloads the page before you even click the link, using any bandwidth not currently in use. This is pointless most of the time, since it is difficult for the program to accurately guess which link on a particular page you will click, if any, and will download and store copies of frequently visited sites on your computer (also useless if these sites are updated often).
That was really beside the point, other than to let you know not to bother anymore with those programs Check out if DSL is available for you -- DSL is extremely cheap these days, you can usually pick it up for around the same price as a lot of dial-up servers.

Obviously the problem is you have the old fashioned 'modem' *rolls eyes* whereas you need to update like you brother to a 'kodem' *thumbs up*

Oh yeah I've heard about them, I heard those new kodems are at least 4 times as fast as a regular modem... they arn't cheap though, well it depends on your area.

Straight up rubbish from the net. A 56k modem will never connect at 56000 cause of old phone lines, it's impossible to get 125000 from a 56k no matter how souped up it is etc.
Quality.

And also, this 56k on STERIODS thing, the NETZERO HIGHSPEED DIALUP! SURF THE WEB 5X FASTER!!!!! Is a bunch of bullshiloni, I know because my friends got it and it causes way more trouble then a regular connection (Images seriously screwed up having to constantly reload them to get them correct)
Bottem Line:
56k Dial Up connection cannot get any faster then its specified rating. Upgrade or live with it.
Kenley, about your problem, you should know that when you connect, your modem is NOT limited to that speed that it CONNECTED by, once your online your speed can jump.
