You should reconfigure your options may be that would fix it. Also the game you downloaded could be a bit broken cause I downloaded from a different spot and everything worls fine for me.
There's a program called Vdmsound that makes sound (and general support) for dos progs better... i can run most Dos games (wacky wheels for example) almost problem free, on windows xp with it. Just do a google search for vdmsound
In another thread about dos games in windows (xp) ... a program called DOSBOX was mentioned. DOSBOX is a windows program that emulates DOS on your computer with sound support as well as other stuff (mouse, cdrom etc etc) ... simply search for DOSBOX at www.googgle.com or similar.
To play with the robot Nova do the following in the Select Robot screen:
Put cursor on Jaguar. Move cursor to the topright corner. Move it down once. Move it to the bottomleft corner. Hold the down arrow for about 10 seconds. Then put the cursor on Flail and press Enter.

I think Nova sucks, Jaguar is the best. Also here are some other cheats:
Advanced options
Hold 2 + 0 + 9 + 7 at any point in the game. Enter the options menu to access increased height, vitality, damage, difficulty, and other selections.
Deadly difficulty level
Press [Right] several times while "Champion Level" is displayed. The "Deadly Level" will appear. Note: This code may only be enabled in single player mode.
Ultimate level
Press O + M + F to select the Ultimate level. Note: This code may only be enabled in single player mode.
Select robot color
Press 1, 2, or 3 on the top row at the robot selection screen to change the first robot's color. Press 4, 5 and 6 to change the second robot's color.
Metal debris
Press R + E + I + N while fighting an opponent. Pieces of metal will fall when your opponent is hit. For the same effect with different intensity, hold B + I + G and press a number on the top row.
Easy money
Purchase a Shadow Robot. Max out the Armor, Stun Resistance, and Leg Speed, and minimize the Leg Strength. Fight your way to Raven in North Am tournament. (This may also work with other Bosses.) Continually advance and quick kick during the battle. The combo meter will fill, allowing the fight to end in a perfect match, with a large amount of bonus money.
Upgrade robot quickly
If you want to upgrade quickly to another robot (Pyros, Shredder) when in tournament mode, win against everybody except Raven. Lose against him in your first attempt, then win in your next attempt. The game's offering of robots is not based just upon money and your robot.

Yeah I've played it. One of my favourite games when I was young.
I played the shareware version to death, and it was always frustrating having earned the Nova, supposedly the best robot in the game, and being able to highlight it in tournament mode, but not being able to select it.
Unfortunately it was ten years later when I downloaded the full game that I realised what a slow, clunky heap of junk the Nova was. :/ Chronos is great, though.
This game is fun. It requires DOSBox on 98 SE, though.
I started a single player game, not bothering to read the controls, and slaughtered every enemy just by tapping ctrl.
Then I tried again, and determined it was a freak chance the first time. That was cool though...what a freak chance.
Now I've finally changed the controls, and I'm working on the tournament mode, but I have a blister from tapping ctrl and shift so much.

I don't use any program to open OMF, I just played it by it own on Win98, I've finished the tournament mode and now my Jaguar is nearly invincible. I've killed Nova about 20 times. Jaguar is really fast.
