I've been in deep thought for a few days about this. Its something I know everyone does, or they have done before. Im talking about cheating in games. When we cheat in games we dont think anythings wrong with it. No one stops us from doing it. We expect games to have codes that will make the game easier, so we dont have to endure the challenge of the game. At any game site theres a cheat section, or how about in the back of game magazines. But what kind of message is this for kids? Kids will play these games and learn at an early age, how to cheat. And since no one will stop them, they think its okay. When you think about, there are other things than violence in modern games.
Well I wouldn't take it that far. If it's part of the game, then your not really "cheating"...your executing some line of code some bumb put in there to help you out!
Cheating in school, thats another story.
ON the whole, however, cheating in video games takes the challenge and the fun out of the game after 5 minutes so whats the point? So what you can beat a game with invincibility, right?
I was once like these people, to be honest. I remember much of my Tribes 2 days, when I would join my most beloved clan SPAM and go into servers causing mayhem and chaos, teamkilling, glitching things up, spamming, the works. Our rationalization? "It's just a game."
People need to understand that sure, it may be just a game atmosphere, but it's not about the game at all(though the game may be involved) - it's about the community, the people around you. It's all about respect.
Why do many people tk, or bot, or crash servers, or cheat, or do something else lame in games? Because they lack respect for others; and more than that, they lack consideration for those around them. They go off on a whim, fulfilling their own personal endeavours, without a care about anyone else. They believe that if you can't enjoy the game with them around, then there's obviously a problem with you, not them. They believe that because it's an environment resting on entertainment, that it justifies their shenanigans.
The thing that they are oblivious too, is the environment itself. It's for entertainment, and if people can't be entertained when you're going about with your little pleasure-seeking chaotic thrill, then it's quite obvious there's a problem with you, not them. They play the game for what it was designed to be, not for what you want it to be. They shouldn't have to twist themselves to conform to your desires.
Another thing that irks me is that they believe there's no reason to 'bitch' if playing there is free. What they constantly refused to understand is that it wasn't free. Maybe free money-wise, but not free time-wise, and we all know that commonly used equation: Time = Money. It took all of use hours to download the game (me, 2 whole weeks), and factor in the actual hours of play. Once you add them up, it's quite a bit of time spent.
Therefore, wouldn't you be disappointed as well to realize that there's to be no order, and that the person next to you gained what he wanted via cheating whereas you decide to do things legit and spend hours - maybe even days or weeks - receiving what he gained in seconds? What's the problem with this scenario? I can safely say that there's too many problems to list.
There's reasons why rules exist people. Rules exist to keep order, and order is far more likely to create peace than anarchy (which can't create peace), and peace means happy people, and happy people means a good experience overall.
So there you go. No justification whatsoever. Only pure rationalizations so people can go on doing what they selfishly desire to do.
Now hold on a minute, some cheats make the game more fun. Like when you make people look funny and stuff.
And if you really think about it, cheating in school actually can make you crafty and sneaky and such. Sure some people say its dishonest in saying that you know something you don't, but when you look at that other persons paper, you know it then.
Ive cheated before and never thought of it to be wrong.
besides if i cheat myself out of playing through a game fairly its my own fault.
I used to cheat loads in the days of my Amstrad cpc but most of the games i did cheat on were so i could play through them for more than two screens without dying. I was very young back then thought.
i cheated on sonic 1 to get to see star light zone. I thought labrinth zone was just too hard. Still a long time ago. and i used the sonic 2 level select loads but so what? ive played through it normally.
nowadays i never cheat, if a game is too hard to play through i just get bored with it.
I think you should only use cheats if you have beaten the game. But sometimes, like in Doom or something, its fun to just blow things up with God mode.
Fine Garbage since 2003.
CURRENT PROJECT:
-Paying off a massive amount of debt in college loans.
-Working in television.
I've been working on TGF Toolkit which can modify TGF .gam files - it could, if I wanted to, modify protected files and allow users to check (by, say, moving objects around or seeing level passwords). Unfortunately it doesn't seem everyone in the community likes that, so I suppose it'll have to just open unprotected "open" files.
its pretty much for educational purposes (and to show I can)... plus it allows people to change the TGF thumbnails, and allow those thumbnails to be different to the actual level contents Oh, and it shows them information embedded in the file such as how many times it has been saved.
When it comes to cheating in games, I see it as to seperate discussion.
Singleplayer games: Wether you "cheat" or not is enterely up to you. Why? Well first of all as DEC Stuff pointed out its rarely real cheating as the cheats are built into the game itself. Furthermore as you play alone you cannot borther anyone. So go ahead ... noone should care if you cheat or not, its enterely up to you. However dont say you beat a game (and take credit for doing so) if you used cheats.
Multiplayer games: This is totally different. Here all cheats are either exploits or addons to the original game. Cheating is cruel and disrespectful unless its clearly stated by the server that these and those cheats can be used. Why? Well on a pure servers people except to play as the game was intended (created) and on equal premises. A cheat always gives unwanted advantages to the user thus its cheating of the worst kind (in games). The arguement "its just a game" is as stupid as it is ignorant. Even though its a game I hope to entertain myself by playing it (the game), and cheaters can spoil just that. Its often immature people with little skills who use cheats because if they did not they would die all the time (which they think is no fun?) so they use cheats so pure gamers die all the time (which the cheaters think is fun?). It is really sad that games developers have to incorporate so many restrictions to keep a game clean ... but I guess thats the way it goes ...
I don't use cheats. I use exploits. If I find a bug in a game that happens to help me out, is it my fault for finding it and using it?
"Hey, look, I can get into that clump of trees...but not out..." - lures enemy into clump of trees - teleports out to nearby units - hits trapped enemy with ranged units until death.
Ok, maybe that's not exactly fair....but it's the games fault, not mine!
I mostly agree with PKeod's speech (which was an excellent speech, by the way). However, cheats can bring back the fun in games that have become dull and boring. Cheats can also rejuvenate the want to play the game by skipping certain parts. I'm not proud of cheating to get past Hume in Eternal Daughter, but because of that I was able to enjoy Eternal Daughter a lot more.
